Translation: Daimajin Kanon Episode 21

The New Year's tearjerker EXTRAVAGANZA continues, with Daimajin Kanon 21! Because leaving people on the episode 20 cliffhanger would just be cruel.

(Also, because the episode 22 will be a clip show, and that just seems an appropriate way to start the New Year, don't you think?)

This episode, I have another cryptic translator's note to offer: the rest home director's name is Akari, which means "light." Keep this in mind when you reach the final song.

Well, that's the last of it! No more translations until 2011! Woo!

NARRATION: This is the story of a girl who wished to have faith in people, then used her singing voice to summon a miracle. A 21st century fable.

[Opening song]
Someone tells you
Lies like they're true
Someone betrays you
To hide their weakness
In the never-ending flow of tears
A reason for living will show itself
Got to live your life
Believin' in these evil times
Sing your heart out
When you feel the love
A song that reflects you
As far as your voice can carry...
Let it ring!
Sing your heart out
When you feel the love
It will surely reach
The hearts of all, some day...
Forces harmonize
You will find the prize
Just sing your heart out

NARRATOR: Kanon's father, Baroku, came to Tokyo from Yamagata. Kanon was shocked to learn of his intent to remarry, but his prospective bride rejected his proposal.

NARRATOR: Meanwhile, Sawamori's faction met up with Kirinoha, and Ikechiyo and Tomosuke headed for Yamagata. Only Taihei and Buchinko remained in Tokyo to watch over Kanon.

TITLE: Elevating Sound

KANON: Akari must have rejected him...

0:02:46
MATSUKO: She really needs to stop that...

KANON: I really want you to come with me. Won't you come?

TAIHEI: What? You want me to come sing with the old people?

KANON: Yes.

TAIHEI: Well that's no problem!

KANON: Thank you so much!

TAIHEI: I don't get to sing much now, so I'll get a lot of singing in!

KANON: That's great! Then I'll see you later.

TAIHEI: Later.

FUKUMATSU: You should do what you believe is right. Nothing I say will change how you feel.

TAIHEI: In other words, you don't want me asking your advice?

FUKUMATSU: Well, there's nothing wrong with leaving the Ipadada to Sawamori and the others.

TAIHEI: Yeah. I'm going to protect Kanon now.

TAMEKICHI: Wah, I'm hungry! I'm so thirsty! Gods, have mercy!

KIRINOHA: So the Ipadada will become a hecatosoul soon?

SAWAMORI: According to Komon, once he becomes a hecatosoul, he'll be able to createsoul drones out of human souls. Then he'll amass those souls into a giant body of his own.

KIRIHA: So that's how a 'great Ipadada' is made.

KIRIHA: Watching helplessly as this happens... even with Tobe at your side. It's pitiful.

HASHITAKA: How dare you look down at us! We've been doing the best we can!

0:05:12
NURSE: Oh yes, he's here. He's been here since this morning.

KANON: Really? That early?

NURSE: He's in the meeting hall.

TAIHEI: I want you to throw inhibitions to the wind. Don't hold back, sing it loud!

TAIHEI: One, two, three, woo! One, two, three, woo! One, two, woo!

AKARI: You have very interesting friends!

MAN: Director!

0:06:05
AKARI: I'm coming in, Sayuri.

AKARI: Sayuri.

AKARI: Is this 'The Bridges of Madison County'? It's a very good movie.

AKARI: You don't have a fever...

0:06:39
SHIZUKO: What did Miss Akari say? Baroku proposed to her!

KANON: You knew about that?

SHIZUKO: We're not senile yet, you know. So did she accept?

SHIZUKO: Oh, I see. Akari is so stubborn!

MATSUKO: What's wrong with her?

HINAKO: You want to know too, don't you, Kanon?

SHIZUKO: Please, Kanon...

KANON: Please... what?

0:07:20
MAN: How's Sayuri doing?

AKARI: She's calmed down. It's fine.

MAN: Thanks. Sayuri doesn't listen to anyone but you, does she?

MAN: Why does Sayuri get so angry when she hears the chorus?

AKARI: She used to be a singer.

AKARI: They say she was very good. But she got a throat infection, and they had to remove her vocal chords.

MAN: That must have been hard on her.

MAN: And watching everyone sing makes it even harder.

AKARI: But everyone looks forward to singing so much.

MAN: That's why we take Sayuri outside, or have her watch videos in her room during chorus practice. But she really doesn't listen to anyone except the director.

MAN: I see.

AKARI: Do you mind? I've been starving all day.

MAN: Oh, by all means.

0:08:19
KANON: Excuse me, director. Could I talk to you?

KANON: I'm sorry for asking... but... why did you do it?

AKARI: It isn't that I don't like him. To the contrary, I'm in love with him.

KANON: No way!

AKARI: Don't be so surprised.

KANON: But... he's not a very good person, you know...

AKARI: I deeply respect your father.

KANON: Respect?

AKARI: We met something like fifteen years ago...

AKARI: The pervious rest home director was engaging in misconduct, and there was a bit of a scandal over it.

AKARI: The prefectural government got involved, and it was looking like they might close us down.

AKARI: We knew that if that happened, the people living here would have nowhere to go.
AKARI: The rest of us were doing everything we could to find a way to keep it open.

AKARI: Fortunately, the prefectural coordinator they sent to deal with our case...

KANON: ... it was dad, wasn't it?

AKARI: Yes. He was willing to hear us out. He told the government about all the people who would lose their homes if this rest home closed. He argued so passionately on our behalf.

AKARI: He worked so hard over something that wasn't even his job. So I admire Mr. Misaki... and so much more.

KANON: So why did you turn down his proposal?

AKARI: I really am sorry. But make sure he understands this. I didn't turn him down because I don't like him.

KANON: I see. I understand.

KANON: I'm sorry to bother you during lunch. I'm going back to the main hall now.

0:10:58
MATSUKO: So she turned Roku down even though she likes him?

SHIZUKO: Oh, she's always been so noncommittal!

HINAKO: It looks like we'll just have to intervene on her behalf.

SHIZUKO: How do you feel, Kanon? You think they should be together, don't you?

KANON: But... wouldn't that be meddling?

SHIZUKO: Meddling?!

MATSUKO: What on earth is wrong with meddling?

SHIZUKO: What's the point of getting older if you can't get meddle a little bit here and there!

TAIHEI: Meddling is fun, right?

KANON: But if Akari left this place, wouldn't it be hard on you?

HINAKO: Of course it would!

HINAKO: But that has nothing to do with this.

SHIZUKO: So, it's settled!

0:12:08
TAMEKICHI: Huh? Huh? Huh?

0:12:48
TAMEKICHI: What... what is this!?

TOBE: It is time.

SAWAMORI: Let's finish this.

SAWAMORI: Is he making a new body!?

SAWAMORI: What's that?

HASHITAKA: What is that!?

0:13:54
KIRINOHA: This is bad...

0:13:58
KANON: All their feelings...

KANON: You want me to write a song?

SHIZUKO: Didn't you say you were good at it?

KANON: Oh no, it's just a hobby.

MATSUKO: It's the same thing!

SHIZUKO: I just think that if we can put all our feelings into a song, it might reach her.

TAIHEI: I think it's a good idea.

KANON: Taihei...

TAIHEI: You can do it, Kanon. In fact, I think you're the only one who can.

0:14:48
KANON: I think this might just work...

TAIHEI: WOAH! This is amazing!

KANON: Really?

TAIHEI: This is great, Kanon!

KANON: Thank goodness!

0:15:07
AKARI: Oh... hello.

BAROKU: Hello...

BAROKU: Um... Kanon asked me to come.

AKARI: No one's in the dining room, and it's already noon... where could they have gone?

TAIHEI: Ah! W-W-Wait a minute! Sit here! Wait just a minute! Just another minute! Sit! Wait right here!! Right here!!

AKARI: I'm sorry about what happened.

BAROKU: You've got nothing to apologize for. I just...

We'll be just fine right here
Let the light of joy you gave us
Shine brightly within your soul

MATSUKO: We sang this song to tell you to leave us old people behind, and find your own happiness.

SHIZUKO: Kanon wrote the lyrics for us.

HINAKO: Don't worry about us one bit!

MATSUKO: Even if you marry Baroku and go back to Yamagata, we'll keep running the chorus and everything running by ourselves!

SHIZUKO: After all, this is your last chance, isn't it?

0:18:36
AKARI: Thank you all. Thank you... so much. I am so grateful for the sentiment. But I...

SHIZUKO: You again? At a time like this?

HINAKO: She's so dependent on Akari, maybe she can't let her go.

SAYARI: The... kind... ness... that...

SHIZUKO: You want to... sing with us?

SHIZUKO: You do? Then let's all sing together!

Now is a time of celebration
For the happiness you've found
There is no need for fear
We'll be just fine right here
Let the light of joy you gave us

BAROKU: Will you come with me? And find our happiness?

AKARI: Yes.

KANON: How long has it been... since I cried tears of happiness like this?

[The Light of Joy]
The guidance that you gave us
Will never leave our mind
We wish you both congratulation
From the bottom of our hearts
There is no need for pain
We'll surely meet again
Let the light of joy we pray for
Shine brightly within your soul

[Kanon's Prayer Song]
La la la la la la...
Joining your voice with mine...
La la la la, and sing as one...
Like... Like the colors of a rainbow...

La la la la la la...
La la la la la la...
La la la la la la...
La la la la la la...

La la la la la la...
If we find a bond between us...
A bond so deep, la la la...
How much warmer will we feel?

[Ending Song]
When I look up, I can still see stars
In the strip of sky between the buildings
Faintly, but I love them
Those little interwoven points of light
I'll send positive words for kindness in the future
And leave my sadness to the wind!
I'm walking home again today
'til I can walk to the place where he waits for me
I'm walking home with that song on my lips
Because I want to smile up at the blue skies
And so, I'm taking my time with my dreams

Translation: Daimajin Kanon Episode 20

It's time for a year-end tearjerker with Daimajin Kanon 20!

I'm not sure what's up with Kanon's first line in this episode, since the only two words she says are "Kumo" (cloud) and "Mocchan" (Taihei's nickname for Moriya, which I've translated as 'Mori').

My best guess is that she's playing a traditional Japanese word game, where you list a string of words, and each word you say must begin with the last mora of the previous word (for instance, mori -> ringo -> gohan (end). Because there are no words that begin with the n-mora, naming a word that ends with that sound ends the game.

Enjoy the ep!

NARRATOR: Trying to recover her old lifestyle, Kanon began getting involved in the lives of others. But reality was as harsh as always, and Kanon struggled to a balance she could feel comfortable with.

NARRATOR: But nevertheless, Kanon began to find new strength and determination.

TAIHEI: How are you feeling today?

KANON: I feel like... I'm starting to see the light...

KANON: But maybe I need a little more time!

TAIHEI: Really?

KANON: Thaaat's right!

TAIHEI: Listen... are you worried about Bujin calling your song a lie?

KANON: Well... I can't say I'm not, but...

TAIHEI: Yeah... he wouldn't tell you what kind of lyrics he'd like to hear... he wouldn't listen to me, either.

KANON: Yeah, but... I feel like somehow... I'm starting to understand!

KANON: I think it'll be fine if I can turn my real feelings into lyrics!

TAIHEI: And what are those feelings?

KANON: My true feelings... that life isn't always beautiful!

TAIHEI: Really?

KANON: That's pretty much the long and short of it!

TAIHEI: Well, all I want is to hear you sing your very own song with confidence.

KANON: Let's go back.

TAIHEI: Sure.

KANON: I'm so hungry...

TAIHEI: I bet!

0:04:20
KANON: Hey, don't toss your nail clippings over here! That's disgusting...

BAROKU: Sorry.

KANON: Look... how long are you fixin' to stay here? Why won't you tell me what you're doin' here in Tokyo?

BAROKU: I've been afraid it might shock to you.

KANON: What could you say that would shock me? I told you, I'm not a kid anymore.

BAROKU: I've fallen in love.

KANON: Huh!?

BAROKU: You're not a kid anymore, so it shouldn't shock you to hear I'm lookin' for a new girl. Right?

KANON: Um... w-wait a minute. Who is it? Where are they from?

BAROKU: I won't say anymore until I pop the question.

KANON: Pop the question... you want to marry her?

BAROKU: Well, I'm sure thinkin' about it.

KANON: Wait a minute! What are you talkin' about!

[Chorus Song]
Oh, the sun is bright today
Let's all take a walk
Lovely, lovely, lovely, lovely
Lovely Mr. Sun!

I don't like to eat scallops
But I love the shrimp
Pop, pop, pop, pop
I pop them in my mouth!

Let's all smile along the way
Everyone as friends
Step by step by step by step--

MATSUKO: Wait a minute, everyone! I like scallops!

SHIZUKO: But scallops get caught in your teeth.

KINAKO: I agree with Matsuko!

SHIZUKO: Then how about sea slug?

KINAKO: That's perfect!

SHIZUKO: Once more, please, Miss Akari!

AKARI: Okay!

[Chorus Song]
Row, row, row your boat
Gently down the stream
Laughing, laughing, laughing, laughing--

AKARI: Sayuri?

SHIZUKO: Why does she always do that?

0:07:20
MARUYAMA: I see. But that sounds like good news... isn't it?

KANON: Yeah.

MARUYAMA: Was it a shock, then?

KANON: Sort of... I mean, I've never even thought about it.

MARUYAMA: I know how you feel.

KANON: He didn't tell me a thing about his new woman...

MARUYAMA: It must be hard to know how to feel.

KANON: It is.

MARUYAMA: Come on in.

MARUYAMA: Welcome.

AKARI: Excuse me... we're looking for this man. Has he been in here?

MARUYAMA: I haven't seen him here, myself...

MARUYAMA: Misaki, would you mind?

KANON: Yes ma'am.

MARUYAMA: You haven't seen this man here, have you? They say he's wandering around.

MAN: He was wearing a Polaroid camera.

KANON: I found him! I'm at the intersection in the third district.

AKARI: Thank you so much! I'm so sorry to keep you waiting.

AKARI: Mr. Ikuno, you mustn't run off like that.

AKARI: But I'm glad you're back.

AKARI: I can't thank you enough. I wish I could return the favor... can I make you some tea?

MAN: Director!

AKARI: I'll take care of it later. Please take Mr. Ikuno to his room.

MAN: Here we go, Mr. Ikuno.

AKARI: Back to your room, now.

KANON: This must be hard work.

AKARI: It takes a lot of energy and willpower.

AKARI: And a love of people, of course.

KANON: Is this a Yamagatan rest home?

AKARI: Yes, the prefectural government sponsors it. It's for Yamagatans living in Tokyo.

KANON: I'm from Yamagata, too!

AKARI: Oh, really! Almost all the old people here were born in Yamagata.

KANON: I see!

SHIZUKO: Miss Akari!

SHIZUKO: Director!

SHIZUKO: My wheelchair is being a bit stubborn. Could you give it a look?

SHIZUKO: Is that a new hire? I just knew you'd find someone.

AKARI: Sorry. If only that were true, but... she just helped me find Mr. Ikuno.

SHIZUKO: What's her name?

AKARI: K... Kanon, I think?

SHIZUKO: Kanon? What an unusual name!

SHIZUKO: The car that went searching for Mr. Ikuno hasn't come back yet?

AKARI: Oh? You think it hasn't? They must have gone out far...

SHIZUKO: I hope they come back soon, along with Roku.

AKARI: Oh, is this it? One minute. I'm going to need someone's help with this one.

KANON: You need some hand room? I'll hold it down.

AKARI: Oh, thank you.

SHIZUKO: How do you know so much about wheelchairs?

KANON: My grandmother used one.

KANON: I'll do it, if you like. I'm good at this kind of thing.

AKARI: Please.

SHIZUKO: Your grandma must have been a nice lady.

KANON: She was.

BAROKU: I'm back!

AKARI: He's back!

AKARI: Thank you for your help!

BAROKU: Wow. You said he got off to the third district?

AKARI: Yes.

BAROKU: He got pretty far on his own. At least it's over now.

AKARI: Thank you so much!

0:12:11
KANON: Dad! What're you doin' here?

BAROKU: Kanon! What're you doin' here?

AKARI: What?

SHIZUKO: What!? Matsuko! Hinako! You have to come meet Kanon!

HINAKO: Oh, what a fine young lady you are!

SHIZUKO: Yes she is!

MATSUKO: What an unusual name, is it really Kanon?

KANON: Yes.

HINAKO: Oh, but what a lovely name!

BAROKU: Oh, thank you.

MATSUKO: Are you in college?

KANON: Yes, I'm a sophomore at Keiyo University.

HINAKO: What a prestigious university!

BAROKU: A little, maybe.

MATSUKO: Do you have a boyfriend?

WOMAN: Of course she does, look how pretty she is!

HINAKO: Oh, that's right! She's just so pretty!

AKARI: Come on, that's enough for today.

AKARI: It's time for bed!

SHIZUKO: Just one more question! What is your hobby?

KANON: I like writing songs... and singing.

SHIZUKO: Singing!?

SHIZUKO: Singing is our hobby, too!

MATSUKO: We all sing in a chorus!

HINAKO: If you ever want to join us, we meet mondays, wednesdays, and fridays!

AKARI: That might be fun! Please come and sing with us!

AKARI: Won't you ask her to come, Mr. Misaki?

BAROKU: Huh? Umm... I don't know about that... I mean, she's got her school and a part-time job. She might not have time.

AKARI: I see...

KANON: I'll come!

BAROKU: What!?

AKARI: Thank you!

0:14:14
KANON: Was that her? The woman you want to marry?

BAROKU: You think she seems like a good person?

KANON: You didn't want me to meet her?

BAROKU: Not 'til everything was sorted out.

KANON: That's so selfish. That woman might be my new mother, y'know... I don't want to wait until you 'get things sorted out' to learn about her...

KANON: What're you doin'?

BAROKU: Now that you know about it, I've made my mind up.

0:15:24
TOBE: You know as well as I do that little time remains. We must defeat the Ipadada.

0:15:39
WOMAN: Watching them yesterday, it looks like Roku didn't tell his daughter anything about Miss Akari.

SHIZUKO: That man... he's so passionate about helping people, yet when it comes to his own family, he's almost careless.

WOMAN: Maybe he was just shocked by the way she showed up so suddenly.

WOMAN: Yes. Maybe Roku just has a hard time expressing himself.

AKARI: Good morning!

WOMEN: Good morning!

WOMAN: At any rate... I hope they find happiness together.

WOMAN: Especially since Roku is starting from nothing, after losing everything back home.

0:16:38
PROVERB: True love breeds determination, not deceit

KANON: Mom...

0:17:24
TAIHEI: She's gone already?

IKECHIYO: Of course she is. Otaki is our leader. Unlike you, she has people counting on her.

TOMOSUKE: It's looking like we'll have to start the ritual against the Ipadada eariler than expected!

TAIHEI: Oh? But...

IKECHIYO: We don't have time to waste.

IKECHIYO: What do you intend to do?

TAIHEI: I...

TAIHEI: Kanon!

KANON: Hello!

IKECHIYO: Tomosuke. Are you ready to go?

IKECHIYO: We're going now.

IKECHIYO: I'll see you later.

TOMOSUKE: Ike, hang on! Wait up!

0:19:04
HASHITAKA: The Ipadada's here?

SAWAMORI: Where is it?

SAWAMORI: Are you alright?

KIRINOHA: He's tired, too. I think I've got him on the run.

TAMEKICHI: Great work, Kirinoha!

HASHITAKA: We can't let him get away!

KIRINOHA: Wait!

SAWAMORI: Hashitaka!

0:19:39
HASHITAKA: Thank you.

SAWAMORI: Hashitaka...

KIRINOHA: The Ipadada has scattered these things to cover his retreat.

SAWAMORI: Let's find him.

0:19:55
KANON: So that's him?

TAIHEI: Yeah. That's Bujin.

KANON: So Bujin... and the Prayer Song... and I... you're saying there's some sort of connection between us?

KANON: Jyuzo and Bujin both called me 'Songstress,' too...

TAIHEI: Yeah.

KANON: It seems like you wanted me to awaken him or something, didn't you? Bujin did talk to me a little bit after I sang that song.

TAIHEI: Kanon...

TAIHEI: It's a little hard for me to explain everything right now. Could you give me a little more time?

KANON: Absolutely.

TAIHEI: So... is this you, Kanon?

KANON: Yes. This is my mother, and this is my grandmother.

TAIHEI: Who's this guy?

KANON: That's my big brother. And this...

KANON: ... actually, my father is getting married again...

TAIHEI: MARRIED!?

0:21:30
BAROKU: I've sorted out all my feelings... and I think you feel the same way. I have something so selfish to ask. People can't make a life by themselves. And I really... really want... to be with you...

AKARI: Thank you... I'm really happy. But... I'm sorry. I can't accept.

AKARI: I don't intend to get married right now. Or ever.

0:22:35
KANON: Mom... I feel like my life has taken a very strange turn. What am I going to do?

TAIHEI: Hey, Kanon. I'm back.

KANON: Dad!

KANON: That night, dad came back stinking drunk. It was the first time I'd ever seen him like that

KANON: Dad! You can't sleep there!

Translation: Kaiketsu Zubatto, Episode 4

Time for more Zu-VATT!

This was a fairly tough episode to work through. The 70s acting style tends a lot more towards the slurring of words than the modern stuff, which makes it hard to pick up certain lines. The show's vintage does mean there are quite a few locations online where one can find good summaries and quotation lists. Even then, finding exact lines can be time-consuming if they're not on my go-to summary sites. This time, as it happens, I just didn't get lucky.

The other difficulty in this episode was thinking of how to translate the villain's name. Usually, the "ringleader villain" of each episode follows a Noun-Noun or Adjective-Noun name scheme (Gold-Mask, Hell-Dragon, Black-Star, etc), which makes translating them a no-brainer -- they're not really names.

In the case of this episode, though, the villain's real name is used as part of his title. his boss-name derives from the fusing of "Oni" (a Japanese ogre) with the first character of his name, "Kan." Although "Kan" translates roughly to "instinct," it's still a representation of his proper name (Kanzou), which is also spoken in the episode as his full title.

I considered going with 'Demon-Kan' instead, but it seemed odd, with the name-scheme, to translate one half of his name and not the other. So, as much as I try to hold to the policy of "translate everything (because you never know who might end up seeing your work)," I decided to leave his title as Oni-Kan.

(Of course, Mr. Hayakawa aggravates things further by making a terrible pun about Kanzou's name. The real pun revolves around the phrase "kan ni sawaru" -- to irritate or aggrivate -- which uses a different character for 'kan' than the one in Kanzou/Oni-Kan's name. As for the pun I ended up with, all I'll say is that I deeply apologize.)

TITLE: The Magnificent Zuvatt!

[Opening Theme]
Zu-VATT, I'm on the scene! Zu-VATT, I solve the case!
Zu-VATT, I'm on the scene! Zu-VATT, I solve the case!
Since the day when I saw that view of hell
The only wind that I feel on my face
Is a wind of revenge, a burning wind!
Hunt them down! Hunt them down, and corner them!

Zu-VATT, I'm on the scene! Zu-VATT, I solve the case!
My friend, my dear friend!
My friend, please watch my howling whip!

I am the Magnificent Zuvatt!

Burning red in the setting sun
Lies the horizon on which we made our vow
But whether I love it now, or hate it...
La la la, la la la...
Like you, I will never return...
As so I walk toward that endless horizon

MAKOTO: Are you okay? Speak to me! What's wrong?

MAKOTO: She's burning up...

TITLE: A Critical Strike, Through Tears

MAKOTO: What do you want, Oni-Kan?

ONIKAN: Spoiling for a fight as ever, Makoto.

ONIKAN: I notice you haven't been attending our gambling house. As a representative of the Oni-Kan Family, I'd like to extend you a personal invitation.

MAKOTO: Leave me alone. You won't get me like you got the villagers. I don't feel like losing my land to you in a toss of the dice.

GANG: What was that?

ONIKAN: Fool Makoto. I see you've got some unusual luggage back here...

MAKOTO: What? She has nothing to do with me... and she's sick. Please, don't hurt her!

ONIKAN: Take her!

MAKOTO: Stay away!

MAKOTO: Stop that! She's sick!

GANG: How dare you!

ONIKAN: Makoto. I'm going to keep beating this woman until you agree to do as I say.

MAKOTO: Stop it! Stop it! Please! Stop!

ONIKAN: And just who are you?

HAYAKAWA: The name 'Kanzou the Oni' inspires fear throughout the land.

HAYAKAWA: I see. Only 'oni can' stomach the sight of your face. Is that why you're called 'Oni-Kan'?

ONIKAN: What was that!?

HAYAKAWA: It's that mark again...

ONIKAN: Get him!

ONIKAN: You!

HAYAKAWA: I got them. As you ordered, sir.

MAKOTO: Careful! The man's a kung-fu master.

HAYAKAWA: I know. The bodyguard of the Oni-Kan Family, Waltz Lee. The second-best kung-fu artist in Japan.

ONIKAN: Second-best? You're kidding. Are you saying there's a better kung-fu artist in Japan than my Waltz Lee!?

ONIKAN: I'll make you eat those words. Waltz Lee! Introduce yourself!

ONIKAN: Did you see that? That's my Waltz Lee's trademark move!

HAYAKAWA: That's my trademark, the inverted mantis.

MAKOTO: Wow!

0:06:39
MAKOTO: Oni-Kan has the whole town fooled. He's stolen their farms and fields and over thirty homes. But I won't give in. I want to make my little plot of land the best field there is!

MAKOTO: Are you going?

HAYAKAWA: Take care of Midori, and... don't tell anybody I was here.

0:07:16
ONIKAN: Now, what will you do? If you can't pay your debts, I could take your land instead.

MAN: Please, anything but that! Spare us, sir!

ONIKAN: Then let's make it triple-or-nothing!

MAN: Triple!?

MAN: That's impossible!

MAN: Yeah!

ONIKAN: Silence!

ONIKAN: We'll go one more round. If you win, you can consider your debts paid.

0:07:45
DEALER: Begin!

MEN: Even!

MEN: Even! Even! Even!

GANG: Damn you!

ONIKAN: Hayakawa...

HAYAKAWA: Oh? And just where did you learn my name, eh?

ONIKAN: If you sit there, you're in.

HAYAKAWA: Ah, wait a minute. We can't do it like this.

ONIKAN: What?

HAYAKAWA: Oh, this kind of gambling... it's no good at all. See!?

HAYAKAWA: A fraud, as I suspected.

ONIKAN: How dare you!

0:08:55
HAYAKAWA: Take it.

ONIKAN: Freeze, Hayakawa! Unless you you care what happens to the townspeople.

GANG: Take this! Take this!

HAYAKAWA: That's dirty, Oni-Kan!

ONIKAN: Hayakawa... remember this... a lone child like you can't hope to stand against an organization as large as mine.

ONIKAN: If you men don't want to end up like Hayakawa, you'll give me your land. When you feel like doing it, I'll let you out!

0:10:00
MIDORI: What fresh air!

MAKOTO: That's because this is my field. I know it's not much to look at, but give me five years and I'll make it the best field there is. I hope I'm not boring you...

MIDORI: Not at all. Your determination makes me want to get up and run around.

MAKOTO: Stop that! You're not well enough for that yet. Please take it easy. I want someone like you by my side.

GANG: Hey there, you two. Hey Makoto, I hear you're not ready to give up your land up yet. We've got everyone in the village locked up now, you know.

MAKOTO: Everyone in the village!?

GANG: And that's not all. That Hayakawa Ken, too.

MAKOTO: Mr. Hayakawa!?

MIDORI: They have Mr. Hayakawa!?

MAKOTO: Midori, don't go!

GANG: I've got orders from the boss not to let you go.

0:11:09
ONIKAN: I knew this would happen. Makoto's field is as good as ours. Do it, Waltz Lee. Just as we discussed.

0:11:28
OSAMU: What's wrong? Speak to me!

MAKOTO: Midori!

OSAMU: Midori!

MAKOTO: Midori, hang on!

MAKOTO: This is bad... the bone is completely shattered.

OSAMU: We have to get her a doctor!

MAKOTO: Impossible. There's no doctor in the village. The only hospital is an hour's drive from here...

OSAMU: Then let's get a car!

MAKOTO: The only car in the town... belongs to the Oni-Kan Family.

OSAMU: Then... what should we do!?

MAKOTO: I'm going out!

0:12:15
EYECATCH: The Magnificent Zuvatt

BOSS L: Fool! You still haven't taken the land I asked you to!? Do you realize what will happen if we leave that troublemaker Makoto's land untouched!?

ONIKAN: Boss L, I've already taken appropriate measures. It's just a matter of time before he comes to me with his land. Have no fear.

BOSS L: If you're a member of the evil organization Dakkar, you'll take it by any means necessary! Kill them! Kill every one of those sniveling peasants!

MAN: Got it. Let's get this over with.

MAN: Excuse me...

GANG: What?

MAN: We've decided to sell our land.

GANG: Oh, really! That's great. This is gonna make our boss real happy...

GANG: C'mon, you too...

0:13:33
HAYKAWA: Mr. Sagura...

0:13:38
ONIKAN: You want me to lend you a car? I've been waiting for this. But it won't come cheap.

MAKOTO: This is what you want, isn't it? The title to my property!

ONIKAN: There's a good boy. Don't mind if I...

HAYAKAWA: One moment.

ONIKAN: Hayakawa... how did you get out?

HAYAKAWA: Don't give it to him. He won't give you a car... just a warrant for your death.

HAYAKAWA: Makoto, I have a car all ready for you.

MAKOTO: Then we'd better hurry!

HAYAKAWA: Yeah. Let's go.

ONIKAN: Get him!

HAYAKAWA: Makoto!

HAYAKAWA: So long, Oni-Kan.

0:14:56
MAKOTO: Hang in there, Midori. We'll have you patched up, soon.

MIDORI: Thank you, Makoto... you were going to trade your beloved land to saveme...

MAKOTO: Please, Midori. Don't try to talk.

HAYAKAWA: What do you want, Waltz Lee? Out of the way! After hurting Midori, you're still not satisfied!?

HAYAKAWA: If you're going to force my hand... very well. Let's go!

0:15:52
HAYAKAWA: Makoto, hurry!

MAKOTO: Don't worry, I'll take care of her!

0:16:26
OSAMU: Makoto! This isn't the way!

MAKOTO: We don't have a second to spare! I'm cutting through my field!

0:16:44
MAKOTO: Midori!

OSAMU: Makoto!

MAKOTO: Idiot! Take care of Midori!

GANG: Fire! Fire!!

MAKOTO: Cowards... if you want to shoot someone, shoot me!!

0:17:13
OSAMU: Makoto! Speak to me! Makoto!

OSAMU: Makoto!

HAYAKAWA: Makoto! Makoto!

MAKOTO: Hayakawa...

HAYAKAWA: Speak to me!

MAKOTO: Hayakawa... the person Midori is searching for... is not her brother's killer.

HAYAKAWA: Don't try to speak!

MAKOTO: Midori is searching... for you.

MAKOTO: Please... make her... happy...

HAYAKAWA: Makoto! Makoto!

HAYAKAWA: Oil!

HAYAKAWA: That's it... the Oni-Kan Family were after the oil... Makoto! It's oil! There's oil under your field!

MAKOTO: Makoto... I'll show you that a lone man CAN defeat the Oni-Kan Family...

TOJO: Hayakawa!

HAYAKAWA: Tojo! Take care of them.

TOJO: Okay.

0:19:00
ONIKAN: What a ridiculous car! Fire! Take it out!

ONIKAN: Fire! Fire!!

ONIKAN: Fire! Destroy it! Fire!!

0:20:07
HAYAKAWA: Flight switch... on!

HAYAKAWA: Zu-VATT, I'm on the scene! Zu-VATT, I solve the case! They call me the wandering hero... the Magnificent Zuvatt!

ONIKAN: The Magnificent Zuvatt...

HAYAKAWA: You deceived the townspeople with shady gambling, stole their land, and killed a blameless young man! Kanzou the Oni... you will pay!

[Opening Song]
Zu-VATT, I'm on the scene! Zu-VATT, I solve the case!
Zu-VATT, I'm on the scene! Zu-VATT, I solve the case!
Since the day when I saw that view of hell
The only wind that I feel on my face
Is a wind of revenge, a burning wind!
Hunt them down! Hunt them down, and corner them!

Zu-VATT, I'm on the scene! Zu-VATT, I solve the case!
My friend, my dear friend!
My friend, please watch my howling whip!

I am the Magnificent Zuvatt!

HAYAKAWA: You killed Asuka Goro, didn't you!

ONIKAN: No! I killed Makoto, but I've never met anyone named Asuka!

ONIKAN: I... don't know anything...

HAYAKAWA: One minute left...

ONIKAN: I swear! You've got the wrong man!

0:21:56
HAYAKAWA: Zuvatt Attack!

HAYAKAWA: I will catch Asuka's killer, with my own hands!

CARD: This is the man behind the depraved murders

TOJO: Hayakawa...

OSAMU: Mr. Hayakawa!

MIDORI: Mr. Hayakawa!

OSAMU: Mr. Hayakawa!

MIDORI: Mr. Hayakawa!

[Ending Theme]
There is a road that a man must walk
That road is his to walk alone
When he devotes his life to a burning wish
He seeks what lies beyond the mountains

Through love and truth and suffering
The way of battle is like the fires of hell
And though he does not know what lies beyond...
That road is his to walk alone

NARRATOR: Oni-Kan was not Goro's killer, either. Where is the true culprit? Ken's quest for vengeance continues!

NARRATOR: Next time, on The Magnificent Zuvatt: The Flower Girl and the White Powder!

NARRATOR: Remember, kids, don't try any of these stunts at home!

Translation: Daimajin Kanon Episode 19

It's ep 19, and I'm feelin' fine. Why? Because my friends bought me the Daimajin Kanon Blu-Ray set! The set contains the first nine episodes, the soundtrack, and an enormous photo-booklet full of concept art and interviews with staff and cast.

Will I translate the interviews and post them here? Maybe!

As for the episode itself, I've got no translator notes or rambles on this episode this time. Enjoy the soulful Kanon goodness!

0:00:00
NARRATION: This is the story of a girl who wished to have faith in people, then used her singing voice to summon a miracle. A 21st century fable.

[Opening song]
Someone tells you
Lies like they're true
Someone betrays you
To hide their weakness
In the never-ending flow of tears
A reason for living will show itself
Got to live your life
Believin' in these evil times
Sing your heart out
When you feel the love
A song that reflects you
As far as your voice can carry...
Let it ring!
Sing your heart out
When you feel the love
It will surely reach
The hearts of all, some day...
Forces harmonize
You will find the prize
Just sing your heart out

0:01:49
NARRATOR: Kanon sang the Prayer Song, and Bujin unexpectedly awakened. But he rejected the song, and in the end, returned to his slumber.

NARRATOR: Meanwhile, Kanon learned that Kotaro has been trying to manipulate her classmate, Kaname. She enlisted Tomosuke to help her learn more about Kaname, but nothing could have prepared her for the truth of Kaname's past.

[blog text]
419: I can't believe it
Why?
No one believes me.
Not even the guy I love.

418: I don't want to go home
The bastard hit me again.
Said he didn't like the way I was looking at him
Mom's gonna be late again today
I don't want to go home.

417: In the end
All people are selfish.

TITLE: Tragic Warmth

TAIHEI: Hey Bujin! You up? I got somethin' to talk with you about!

TAIHEI: What is it in the song you don't like!? What partis a lie!?

TAIHEI: Kanon's been through a lot of hard stuff! She's been hurt! But she can't turn to stone, so she's out there, doing the best she can!

TAIHEI: At least tell us what part of it is a lie!

TAIHEI: Bujin!!

0:03:13
OTAKI: Has her life really been that hard?

KANON: Yes. Right after she was born, her father left her family for another woman... and after that, her new step-father started knocking her around. But... her mother doesn't stand up for her at all.

IKECHIYO: That really is awful.

KANON: Her mother moves whenever she feels like it, so she didn't have any friends up to middle school... her blog gave the impression of someone who feels totally unwanted.

KANON: When she got to high school, she got some popularity, based on her appearance...

IKECHIYO: But things still didn't work out, did they?

KANON: She still couldn't trust anyone from the bottom of her heart. She's always erasing friends' addresses from her cell phone. It's like she just can't maintain relationships for long.

OTAKI: I imagine she's afraid of being abandoned.

KANON: Maybe it's too much for me to deal with, after all.

OTAKI: You shouldn't try to carry more than you can hold. Maybe you shouldn't get involved with her. She's tricked you before, after all.

IKECHIYO: At any rate, you'll want to do some thinking about it. Right?

0:05:06
KANON: What a beautiful moon...

KANON: At times like this, I wonder what Taihei would say.

TAIHEI: What's this about me?

KANON: Taihei?

TAIHEI: Hey, Kanon. What's up?

KANON: A lot of things, really...

TAIHEI: We can talk about it, if you want.

KANON: It's kind of a long story.

TAIHEI: No worries. The night is young.

TAIHEI: Hey, Kanon? What's wrong?

KANON: Taihei... can I ask you something?

TAIHEI: Um... sure, anything.

KANON: You remember Mr. Moriya?

TAIHEI: Oh yeah, Mori?

KANON: Yeah, the man who broke his promise to you.

TAIHEI: What happened to the Mori that wrote that song?!

MORIYA: That was just a song. It has nothing to do with reality.

KANON: If you happened to run into him again somewhere, and he seemed to be in trouble... what would you do?

TAIHEI: Hmm? Kanon, don't forget that I'm an Onbake. If he needed me, I'd help him. There's nothing else I could do.

KANON: You'd still trust him, after what he did to you?

TAIHEI: Yeah, I would.

KANON: But why?

TAIHEI: Good question... because I want to love people, I guess.

KANON: Love... people?

TAIHEI: Yeah. No matter what happens, I want to love people.

KANON: That's true. Yes, that's right!

TAIHEI: Right?

KANON: Thank you, Taihei! That's why I love you, Taihei.

TAIHEI: Love me?

KANON: Never change, Taihei. Good night!

SHOTA: She loves you, Taihei.

SHOTA: Nice goin'.

0:08:40
HASHITAKA: No way!

0:08:45
TAIHEI: Hey, Jyuzo. What's Gonbei's involvement with this, exactly?

JYUZO: You saw Sawamori's ritual before, right? He'll be doing the same.

TAIHEI: You think he can contain the Ipadada inside him?

JYUZO: For an Ipadada that big, a great big guy like Gonbei is the only choice we have.

TAIHEI: But... if not even Sawamori could restrain it...

JYUZO: This Ipadada's power truly is great... but if Gonbei can exhaust it in battle, maybe it can be sealed.

JYUZO: Anyway, you take care of that Songstress. Okay?

TAIHEI: Roger that.

0:09:52
KANON: This is the seat where Fukatsu was sitting.

TOMOSUKE: Are you sure about this?

KANON: What?

TOMOSUKE: I mean, you're totally prepared to deal with her?

KANON: Don't worry. I talked to Taihei, and I want to try.

TOMOSUKE: Okay, I'll do my best!

TOMOSUKE: She's here! She's close!

0:11:15
KANON: Fukatsu... can we talk?

KANAME: I'm busy.

KANON: I heard Kotaro's trying to use you for something.

KANAME: What's that supposed to mean?

KANON: I just overheard it somewhere. Kotaro's trying to--

KANAME: Stop it. Kotaro cares about me. People just don't like me, so they're spreading bad rumors about me.

KANON: No, I'm just worried about you...

KANAME: I hate hypocrites like you.

KANON: Hypocrites?

KANAME: Don't trouble yourself any further.

KANON: Wait...

0:12:16
TOMOSUKE: It's on me. I think you'll like it.

KANON: Thanks...

KANON: Bottoms up...

KANON: It is good...

TOMOSUKE: I knew it!? Nice move, Tomosuke!

KANON: A hypocrite, huh?

TOMOSUKE: You're not a hypocrite, Kanon. That girl just wants to think you are.

TOMOSUKE: Humans are complicated. Someone changes because of someone else's actions. Someone else sees that, and they change too.

KANON: I have to go somewhere.

TOMOSUKE: Where?

KANON: I have to talk to Kotaro.

TOMOSUKE: Why?

KANON: I'm going to tell him to leave Kaname alone.

0:14:01
TOMOSUKE: Taihei!

TAIHEI: Fancy meetin' you here!

TAIHEI: Hmm? Where's Kanon?

KANON: If he's not picking up at a time like this, he must be... there.

0:14:45
KOTARO: Kanon?

KANON: Hot milk, please.

BARTENDER: One moment.

KOTARO: You changed your mind about getting together?

KANON: I've come to stop you.

KOTARO: What?

KANON: Stop using Fukatsu to do your dirty work.

KOTARO: I don't know what you're talking about. Why do you care, anyway?

KANON: I don't want to see her in pain.

KOTARO: She seems happy enough when she's with me.

KANON: You're not even really dating her.

KOTARO: Then how about we hook up again? You're hot when you're aggressive like this.

KANON: Shut up.

KOTARO: So, you want to do it with me again?

KANON: I said, shut up.

KOTARO: I'd like to hear you sing it... 'To The Top.'

KOTARO: What are you doing!?

0:16:25
KANON: You ASSHOLE!

TAIHEI: Kanon!

KANON: Taihei?

TAIHEI: I was a little worried... Tomosuke helped me find you.

TOMOSUKE: Kanon?

TAIHEI: Oh, Buchinko?

TAIHEI: What? What's that!?

KANON: What's going on?

TOMOSUKE: He said Kotaro called Kaname. They've got an exchange going down tonight.

KANON: Really?

TAIHEI: Where are they going?

TAIHEI: Oh... Roppongi?

KANON: Where in Roppongi?

TOMOSUKE: Don't worry. I'll track her down.

0:18:17
TAIHEI: Kanon.

KANON: Are you meeting someone here?

KANAME: What do you want?

KANON: Fukatsu... you need to go home. The person you're meeting is up to no good.

KANAME: I don't know what you're talking about. Get out of here and leave me alone.

KANON: Kotaro told me himself. You can't trust him.

KANAME: I told you, go away!

KANON: You have to stop lying to yourself.

KANAME: What are you talking about?

KANON: You know something's wrong here, don't you? You want to refuse him, don't you?

KANAME: Don't be stupid!

KANON: But you're worried that he'll hate you if you don't pretend to trust him!

KANAME: Stop kidding yourself.

KANAME: What are you doing?

KANON: I read your blog. It was so sad.

KANAME: What? Seriously?

KANON: I understand what it's like, wanting to form a connection with someone. I've felt that way ever since I moved here from the country. That's why Kotaro could take advantage of me.

KANAME: Don't lump me in with you. I'm nothing like you.

KANON: That's not what's important!

KANAME: Do you always do this?

KANON: Do you feel warmer when I hold your hand?

KANAME: Not especially.

KANON: I see...

KANAME: Let go.

KANON: I just want to love people.

KANAME: You're an idiot.

IKECHIYO: So, they got him in the end.

OTAKI: Some people just don't change. Maybe this is for the best.

TOMOSUKE: Kanon says she hasn't seen Kaname much since then.

TAIHEI: I have faith. I think Kanon got through to her, and changed her just a bit.

OTAKI: Then she just needs time, I suppose.

0:22:05
KANON: Thank you...

KANON: I guess the gap between us won't close overnight... I tried joining hands with her, but it didn't make us feel warmer the way it says in the Prayer Song.

KANON: But... if I keep trying to connect with her, I think something will change.

KANON: And that's okay! People won't always act the way it says in the Prayer Song. But that doesn't mean we should stop trying to join hands.

KANON: When I think about things like that, I feel a little stronger than before.

NARRATOR: Kanon thinks about how to help Baroku. Kiriha uses her techniques to rend a soul drone. And Buchinko reveals a secret about Bujin.

Translation: Daimajin Kanon Episode 18

Here we are, down to the last 1/3 of the show! Things are getting crazy, but more importantly... hopeful! (Note another slight change to the opening narration!)

I'm going to try to phrase my main translator's note in more general terms. Mostly because I don't want to spoil what happens in this episode, but also because I'll take any excuse to talk about Japanese linguistic development.

(If you've studied Japanese, you can probably skip over this-- it's just an explanation of on and kun readings.)

A bit over 1000 years ago, Japanese culture received a huge wave of influence from China. One of the things they ended up importing was their writing system. Chinese was to Japan what Latin was to early European culture -- the language you had to speak and write if you wanted to be taken seriously.

Of course, over time, the Chinese writing system was adapted to write Japanese, as well. The result of this is that even today (much to the frustration of many a Western college student) there are usually at least two ways to read any given Japanese pictograph: a Chinese reading, and a Japanese reading.

For instance, the pictograph 元 can be read "Gen" in 元気 (Genki), or it can be "Moto" in 足元 (Ashimoto). 小 can be read as "Shou" in 小学 (Shougaku), or as "Ko" in 小町 (Komachi). Etc.

Presented now, for your consideration, are the Chinese and Japanese readings of three other relevant pictographs:

大: Chinese: Dai; Japanese: O
魔: Chinese: Ma; Japanese: Ma
人: Chinese: Jin; Japanese: Hito

Enjoy!

Edit 12/31/2010: Changed a few lines in the Kanon/Kotaro scene.

Edit 1/11/2010: Fixed an inconsistency in the opening narration. Thanks for the heads up, reader Crus!)

NARRATOR: The girl, Kurara, was torn from the music she loved by her mother's controlling nature. Kanon tried to encourage Kurara, but shockingly, the girl chose a life with her mother instead. Kanon felt powerless to stop her.

NARRATOR: Meanwhile, the Onbake learned what lay deep in the Ipadada's heart.

KANON: No matter how good your intentions, getting involved with others has its risks. I felt that with Kurara, too... but I still feel it's wrong not to get involved at all.

KOTARO: Are you serious?

FUJITA: Yeah.

FUJITA: The board reached some decisions while you were in the hospital. I tried to fight them, of course. But circumstances have made you a bad investment.

KOTARO: So it's just over? ... You've gotta be kidding.

FUJITA: Shinya and Ikki are already looking for a new band.

KOTARO: What about Saki?

FUJITA: She's in New York. Didn't you know she's been wanting to go to America?

FUJITA: She's staying in one of the cheap company-owned apartments there. She's studying.

KOTARO: I wish I could study too.

FUJITA: Too bad you didn't say so earlier.

SIGN: [Lyrics to Prayer Song]

KANON: What should I do? Oh, what's wrong with me...

TAIHEI: Sounds like you hit a wall, Kanon.

KANON: Whenever I try to revise the lyrics, it all comes out so negative... I guess Kurara is weighing on my mind...

TAIHEI: What's wrong with keepin' it as it is? It's a good song. Come on... try it like this.

KANON: But I feel like it doesn't acknowledge the harsher realities of life.

TAIHEI: Oh yeah?

KANON: You want me to sing it?

[Prayer Song]
When the sound of the bell
Rings through the village
All the birds, together,
Fly back to the mountain

No one wants to be all alone
But each has only one voice
So let's join all our voices together
And bring a smile to everyone

If we all join hands together,
How much warmer will we feel?

BUJIN: That's enough!

BUJIN: I hate that song!

OTAKI: What was that voice!?

TAIHEI: Is that Bujin!?

BUJIN: That is what they call me. My real name is Omahito.

KANON: Omahito?

BUJIN: That voice... are you the Songstress of this era?

KANON: Songstress?

TAIHEI: Oh, you're finally awake... that's great... that's so great!

BUJIN: It is not... what's great about it?

TAIHEI: What do you mean?

BUJIN: The words of that song are a pack of lies!

KANON: The lyrics, you mean?

BUJIN: Never sing it again!

TAIHEI: Wait a minute! What are you talking about!? How is it a lie!? Answer me, Bujin! Bujin!!

0:09:09
KANON: What just happened? What was that voice?

OTAKI: Calm down a moment. We'll explain everything.

IKECHIYO: The truth is, Kanon, Buchinko acts as something of a two-way radio.

IKECHIYO: With his partner, the Onbake Tamakko in Yamagata.

KANON: Tamakko?

TAIHEI: Yeah. Your voice traveled through them to reach Bujin.

KANON: Bujin... you mean, that Omahito person?

TAIHEI: Yeah. He's our predecessor, the first Onbake. Five hundred years ago, events turned so that he closed up his heart and turned to stone.

KANON: Closed up his heart and turned to stone?

TAIHEI: Yeah.

KANON: So why did my song wake him up? And why did it make him so angry?

TAIHEI: That's just it. I'm gonna go down there. I'm gonna ask him what part of your song is a lie.

TAIHEI: If I don't do it, no one will!

KANON: Lies, huh?

0:10:53
JYUZO: So Bujin rejected the song, huh? But I was just sure that Songstress 'd get through to him...

0:11:30
KAENJI: Hey! Can you hear me!?

TAMEKICHI: Speak to us!

SAWAMORI: The Ipadada...

0:11:58
GIRL: No way. Really? But he seemed so quiet...

GIRL: Misaki!

GIRL: Hey, Misaki!

KANON: What is it?

GIRL: Um... here, talk to us a moment!

GIRL: Over there!

GIRL: You know Kotaro from 0°C, right?

KANON: Not anymore, really...

GIRL: I was in a restaurant in Roppongi yesterday and I overheard him on the phone... and he...

GIRL: We think he was talking to his girlfriend or something... he was asking her to take on some shady work...

KANON: Shady work?

GIRL: Selling... illegal drugs.

GIRL: Is Kotaro really... that kind of guy?

KANON: I don't know... I don't talk to him anymore.

0:12:58
BOY: She's sleeping.

BOY: And in the same clothes as yesterday.

BOY: What a slob.

BOY: Seriously.

KANON: Fukatsu?

KANAME: Okay, here, take this.

KANON: You tricked me!

KANON: Attending classes for you... it's dishonest.

KANAME: But my grandmother's really sick...

GIRL: It's a big fat lie. We saw her driving off with her boyfriend earlier.

KANON: How can she be so selfish... so content to take advantage of people?

KANON: Ta-da!

KOTARO: What's that?

KANON: I made it! It's 0°C's first official merchandise!

KOTARO: Wow! That's professional quality.

KANON: But this one's just for you and me.

0:14:03
KANAME: What is it?

KANON: Nothing.

KANAME: I see.

0:14:42
SAWAMORI: You're saying Bujin...

TAIHEI: He woke up, then turned right back to stone.

HASHITAKA: It looks like Gonbei really will have to substitute for him...

SAWAMORI: But we expect the Ipadada to become a hecatosoul within the month...

TAIHEI: A hecatosoul...

KAENJI: Yeah.

TAIHEI: But there's no way Gonbei can face something like that...

SAWAMORI: No. We won't let it happen. We'll just have to stop him before then.

TAIHEI: Bujin... I've got to hurry.

0:15:44
KOTARO: Hey, long time no see. Too bad about what happened...

KANON: Are you going out with Fukatsu now?

KOTARO: What makes you say that?

KANON: She had the towel I made for you.

KOTARO: What's wrong? Jealous?

KANON: Don't be an idiot.

KOTARO: We're not doing anything like that, you know. Though she wants it pretty bad...

KANON: What are you talking about?

KOTARO: She does whatever I ask her. It's refreshing.

KANON: I see fame has done nothing for your character, Kotaro.

KOTARO: Hey. Wanna come back to 0°C?

KANON: Go jump off a bridge!

0:17:06
KOTARO: I've been looking for you.

KANAME: No way, why!?

KOTARO: You didn't answer your phone.

KANAME: I'm sorry, the battery ran out!

KOTARO: Come back to my place later.

KOTARO: I've got a big surprise for you.

KANAME: Really? What is it?

0:17:35
OTAKI: You don't even like that girl, do you?

KANON: Well... no.

OTAKI: And yet you're still worried about her. I guess that's just the person you are.

OTAKI: But you shouldn't get involved if you're not entirely committed.

IKECHIYO: I agree. Nothing good can come of it if you're not willing to see it through.

KANON: With Kurara, when push came to shove...

MAMA: She's my daughter. She always comes around to what I say.

KANON: Kurara...

KANON: I really didn't see it through.

IKECHIYO: So what are you going to do?

KANON: I'm going to do everything I can. Even if it makes me a busybody.

KANAME: I'll make some tea.

KANAME: W-Wait a minute...

KOTARO: Why?

0:19:21
KOTARO: Maybe we shouldn't. Sorry.

KANAME: Why? I don't mind...

KOTARO: I want to be good to you.

KANAME: Thank you. That makes me so happy...

KOTARO: Listen...

KANAME: What?

KOTARO: I've got a job for you. Can you do it?

KANAME: What is it?

KOTARO: It pays extremely well. I think you can handle it.

0:20:20
TAIHEI: When Kanon sang the Prayer Song, Bujin said it was a lie!

JYUZO: I guess Bujin's lost faith in it, after all... there might be nothing we can do about it...

TAIHEI: What do you mean, 'after all'?

JYUZO: Ah, well... had a feeling.

TAIHEI: But seriously. I just can't believe he woke up just to go back to sleep. There was a lot I wanted to talk to him about...

0:21:30
SAWAMORI: Hey!

KAENJI: Up there...

0:21:44
TOMOSUKE: I haven't been here in a while... I smell girls all around!

KANON: Tomosuke... you're acting like a dirty old man.

KANON: Tomosuke and I asked after Fukatsu everywhere. About what kind of girl she was... and then...

KANON: Her blog?

BOY: Yeah. I hear she had a blog when she was in high school. Maybe you could check that out.

KANON: At last, someone from her old high school gave me the URL of her blog.

SAWAMORI: We have to hurry.

KANON: It was the saddest thing I've ever seen...

NARRATOR: Kanon races to expose Kotaro's trap. Taihei rebukes Bujin for his words. And Tomosuke shows his love of milk.

Translation: Daimajin Kanon Episode 17

Well, that episode went by fast! Maybe because it consists primarily of exchanges between two shy, polite ladies who speak very proper Japanese?

No big notes about this episode, except that Kanon's dad prepares another crazy Yamagatan specialty here, translated here as 'rolled konjac.'

Touched on briefly in my notes for the last episode, konjac is a firm gelatin-like substance made from the devil's tongue plant. It's typically sold in rectangular blocks for slicing, but the Yamagatan preparation has it rolled into little spheres and marinated in dashi base, soy sauce, sake, and sugar.

Enjoy the episode below the cut!

NARRATION: This is the story of a girl who struggled with her faith in people, then used her singing voice to summon a miracle. A 21st century fable.

[Opening song]
Someone tells you
Lies like they're true
Someone betrays you
To hide their weakness
In the never-ending flow of tears
A reason for living will show itself
Got to live your life
Believin' in these evil times
Sing your heart out
When you feel the love
A song that reflects you
As far as your voice can carry...
Let it ring!
Sing your heart out
When you feel the love
It will surely reach
The hearts of all, some day...
Forces harmonize
You will find the prize
Just sing your heart out

NARRATOR: The girl Kurara meaningfully and deeply played the melody of Kanon's beloved Prayer Song. But when the girl's mother appeared, she displayed a strange reaction.

NARRATOR: Meanwhile, the ever more powerful Ipadada unleashed its fury on a small town in the east of Japan.

TITLE: Shackled Sound

KURARA: If you're looking for my mother, she's not here.

KURARA: Listen... why? Why are you so concerned about me?

KURARA: And how did you know I live here?

KANON: The manager of the supermarket told me.

KURARA: Oh, is that it?

KANON: Anyway, how are you feeling?

KURARA: Feeling?

KANON: Your hand.

KURARA: Hand?

KANON: Has this happened before?

KURARA: Um... really, why are you so concerned about me?

KANON: I heard you play that song in the music shop...

KURARA: To The Top?

KANON: I've had a bit of... trouble with that song in the past. But when I hear you play it, it really... connects with me.

KURARA: So?

KANON: It's hard to say, but... I think music communicates the feelings of the person who plays it.

KANON: When I heard your song, it felt like you were asserting 'this is the music I want to play.'

KURARA: Is that why you didn't suspect me of shoplifting back at the store?

KANON: I don't think anyone who playslike that could be a bad person.

KURARA: This way!

KANON: Is that car...

KURARA: Mama's home. That's why I ran.

KURARA: She keeps asking me about my hand... ever since yesterday. She's always been persistent, but lately she's turning it up to eleven.

KANON: It's because she's worried about you, Kurara.

0:05:22
KURARA: If she's worried... I think it's for herself, not for me.

KURARA: It's like I don't have any value to her unless I'm playing what she wants me to.

KURARA: So if I couldn't play anymore...

MAMA: Kurara! Kurara!

KURARA: What should I do?

KANON: Would you like to come home with me?

KURARA: What?

KANON: Let's go!

0:07:00
TOBEI & HASHITAKA: Rest in peace!

TAMEKICHI: Your prediction was right-on, Doukan! We're gonna take that Ipadada down!

0:07:27
SAWAMORI: It's manifesting?

HASHITAKA: Its grudge is growing stronger!

TAMEKICHI: Why does it have to be me!?

KAENJI: Look out!

TAMEKICHI: Kaenji!

SAWAMORI: Kaenji!

HASHITAKA: Sawamori!

SAWAMORI: Kaenji!

0:08:11
KANON: Come on in.

KANON: You want to play it?

KURARA: Yeah...

KURARA: I can't play now, though...

KANON: It's not good to lie.

KANON: You were playing just fine earlier, on the giraffe in the park.

KANON: I'm glad you can still play. You really love the piano, don't you?

KANON: But your mama won't let you play what you like, so you pretended like you hurt your hand to get back at her. Right?

KURARA: Mama just uses me as a tool to get back at my father.

KANON: What are you talking about?

KURARA: Papa was a classical pianist. He taught me to love the piano... but ever since they separated, mama's become a completely different person. Mama wants me to reach top of the classical music world... to make my father regret what he's done.

KANON: So, pop songs like To The Top...

KURARA: Mama doesn't like me to play them, so I have to do it outside the house. I just love putting my own feelings into my music.

KURARA: Um... so do you mind if I play?

KANON: Please do.

KURARA: Okay!

0:10:56
KURARA: When I play like this, it's like I forget all my sadness and pain. Like I'm flying freely in the sky...

MAMA: If you're hiding Kurara here, hand her over at once!

TAIHEI: Look, no one knows what you're blabbin' about!

OTAKI: That's right, you ungrateful woman. Your daughter isn't here, so just leave us alone!

OTAKI: H-Hey, wait a minute!

MAMA: If she's not here, then you go looking for her!

KANON: You really do bring your feelings out in your music.

KURARA: Thank you!

KANON: You can come here to play again if you want to.

KURARA: Really!?

KANON: Kurara...

KURARA: Yes?

KANON: Wouldn't you like to show your mother how you feel?

KURARA: Show her...?

KANON: You should try to play a song you really love for your mother.

KURARA: But... if she knows I prefer this kind of music...

0:12:28
TAIHEI: Kanon!

TAIHEI: Kanon! Ah...

SAWAMORI: Kaenji!

TAMEKICHI: Kaenji!

HASHITAKA: He's here!

TAMEKICHI: Ah, over there!

TAMEKICHI: Kaenji!

TAMEKICHI: Where's the Ipadada!?

SAWAMORI: It seems to have left his body...

TAMEKICHI: It's like he's having a nightmare or something...

SAWAMORI: Traces of the Ipadada's heart may still remain within him...

0:13:17
KANON: Welcome home! You're back early!

BAROKU: Yeah... listen, d'you know those two kids downstairs?

KANON: Yeah, so?

BAROKU: Hmm? Is one of them... y'know?

KANON: Don't be stupid!

BAROKU: Gotcha. Then who's the cute little girl?

KANON: Oh, she's the pianist I was telling you about yesterday.

BAROKU: So what're you doin' with her?

KANON: I want her to show her mama the music she really wants to play!

BAROKU: And that'll teach her a lesson, huh?

KANON: I don't know about that... we'll just have to see what happens.

BAROKU: You might just change her mind.

KANON: Y'think so!?

BAROKU: Or maybe not.

BAROKU: Kanon.

KANON: What!?

BAROKU: Just be prepared in case she doesn't go along with you.

KANON: I am!

BAROKU: The parent-child bond is a strong one.

KANON: What?

0:14:41
MAMA: So you were hiding her, after all!

MAMA: Please get out of my way.

KANON: Ma'am, you need to listen to what she has to say.

MAMA: If she needs to talk to her mother, she can do it at home.

TAIHEI: If you're her mother, than act like it! You should show her some affection!

MAMA: Just what is it you want me to do?

KANON: Ma'am, please, you need to look at your daughter! Can't you see she's afraid of you?

MAMA: That's none of your business!

KANON: Yes it is!

MAMA: No it isn't!

KANON: If you really love her, you should see what you're doing to her!

MAMA: What exactly do you want from me? Do you want to be responsible for this girl's whole future? Because I am!

KANON: Kurara should decide her own future!

MAMA: No, I should! I'm enough for her.

OTAKI: I can't believe this...

KANON: I love music just like Kurara... being a musician is my dream. That's why I want you to hear the music Kurara really loves!

MAMA: Just what are you trying to say?

KURARA: I... the music I really want to play... isn't Classical...

MAMA: How many times do I have to tell you, I don't care about what you want!

OTAKI: Hey! Do you even understand what you're saying!?

TAIHEI: Anyway, here... Kurara's gonna play... her favorite song for you...

KURARA: Kanon!

MAMA: Come on!

KANON: Wait a minute!

KANON: I can't give up now. Not until Kurara's mother hears your song...

KANON: Wait for me, Kurara!

0:17:00
TAMEKICHI: A voice?

KAENJI: It seemed to follow the boy and me wherever we ran... that cold, self-righteous voice...

MOTHER: Kento... Kento... Kento... Kento...

KENTO: I'm sorry... I'm sorry...

MOTHER: Kento... Kento... Kento... Kento...

KAENJI: Stop it!

MOTHER: Kento... Kento... Kento... Kento...

KAENJI: Let's go!

MOTHER: Kento... Kento... Kento... Kento...

MOTHER: Come back here!

MOTHER: Kento... Kento... Kento... Kento...

MOTHER: Who is that!? He's taking me away from you!

KAENJI: What's wrong...

MOTHER: Don't let him take me! You have to stop him!

KAENJI: You...

HASHITAKA: What a terrifying dream...

KAENJI: The boy was afraid of that voice... it frightened even me. I don't think he can trust anyone... he sees everyone as an enemy.

HASHITAKA: ... even his own mother...

KANON: I sent her a text message that we'd meet her here.

KANON: But I haven't received a reply yet...

PHONE: You have no new messages

KANON: Kurara...

MAMA: We're going. Hurry!

MAMA: For heaven's sake... do you intend to take responsibility for everything you've put my daughter through?

KANON: I haven't done anything wrong.

MAMA: But thanks to you, we've made a decision. We can't stay in this country if we want her to succeed.

KANON: Did Kurara agree to that?

MAMA: Of course she did. She's my daughter. She always comes around to what I say.

KANON: Kurara!

TAIHEI: Kanon! Hurry!

KANON: Wait!

KANON: Kurara...

BAROKU: Oh, you're back, huh?

BAROKU: They had your favorite rolled konjac, so I bought you a pack.

BAROKU: Eat 'em while they're hot. C'mon.

KANON: What should I have done?

Translation: Kaiketsu Zubatto, Episode 3

More Zuvatt, because it's fun!

In this episode I deal with the difficult matter of "what to do when a character employs blatant Engrish." Under most circumstances, I might just ignore that kind of thing, or keep in the English words and put them in italics.

Here, though, Killer Joe's speech pattern is so utterly ridiculous I feel it is a crime not to render it somehow. Hence, I have replaced his ridiculous English with ridiculous Italian. I don't speak any Italian, myself, but I imagine this can only enhance the effect.

Enjoy!

0:00:30

0:01:50
[Hayakawa's Song]
Burning red in the setting sun
Lies the horizon on which we made our vow
But whether I love it now, or hate it...
La la la, la la la...
Like you, I will never return...
As so I walk toward that endless horizon

MAN: Hey, girlie...

MAN: Hmm? What's wrong?

MAN: C'mon, let's go dancin'... how about it?

HAYAKAWA: Excuse me, sir. The lady doesn't like it.

MAN: Don't worry about it.

HAYAKAWA: Sir.

MAN: How dare you! What do you think you're doing!?

HAYAKAWA: Can't you read? The sign says 'no smoking.'

0:02:34
TITLE: The Golden Angel of Sorrow

GANG: Wait there, you!

SHIZUKA: Save me!

HAYAKAWA: What seems to be the trouble here?

GANG: Listen, buddy. Hand the woman over.

GANG: Do you dare oppose the Goldbadge Cartel!? Give us the girl!

GANG: It's Joe!

JOE: Voi are no match for him. My knife is a more elegant weapon.

SHIZUKA: He's an enforcer.

HAYAKAWA: I know.

JOE: You know mi? Wow! Bene! Did you hear that? Io have become very famous indeed.

HAYAKAWA: You're Killer Joe. GoldMask's bodyguard... and Japan's second-best knife-thrower.

JOE: Come ti chiami?

HAYAKAWA: Hayakawa Ken. A wandering private detective.

JOE: Oh? Signore Hayakawa, is it? You say io am the second-best knife-thrower? Then who's the best, eh!?

JOE: I like you, boy. You have a healthy self-esteem.

JOE: Capisci? Io am the "Ace" of knife-throwing!

HAYAKAWA: Oh? I see...

HAYAKAWA: If I may.

GANG: What are you doing!?

GANG: He hit all our gold badges!

HAYAKAWA: Capisci? Io am the "Ace" of Goldbadge extermination.

0:05:10
HAYAKAWA: Why were those men after you?

SHIZUKA: Probably because of my brother...

HAYAKAWA: Your brother?

SHIZUKA: My brother worked for a newspaper. He was investigating the Goldbadge Cartel... but then... last month... we found him, dead...

HAYAKAWA: You think GoldMask killed him?

SHIZUKA: I don't know. But... I have to find out.

HAYAKAWA: I know just how you feel.

HAYAKAWA: I too am searching... for the man who killed my best friend...

0:06:25
GANG: Yeah, he's in here!

YAMANE: What do you want!?

ICHIRO: Save me, papa! Save me!

YAMANE: What are you doing to him!? Ichiro! Ichiro!

YAMANE: Stop it! Please!

ICHIRO: Save me, papa!

GOLDMASK: I love gold more than anything! If you value the lad's safety, you'll give me the Golden Angel!

YAMANE: I can't... it isn't mine to give!

GOLDMASK: Well then... that's too bad.

GOLDMASK: What's that sound!?

GOLDMASK: Who are you!?

HAYAKAWA: All this blathering on about gold... you're as obsessed with it as ever, GoldMask.

HAYAKAWA: They wear the same mark...

HAYAKAWA: You may cover yourself with shining gold... but your soul is the black plague!

GOLDMASK: Just who are you!?

HAYAKAWA: I won't utter my name for a plague like you.

GOLDMASK: Listen, kiddo! You'll regret this next time we meet!

HAYAKAWA: So long!

HAYAKAWA: Is the boy alright?

YAMANE: He's fine. Thank goodness this lady brought a first-aid kit.

SHIZUKA: I'm in training to become a nurse.

YAMANE: Look at this. This is the Golden Angel.

YAMANE: They told me it was forged by Leonardo Da Vinci. It's worth 30 billion yen.

HAYAKAWA: 30 billion!?

YAMANE: Yeah.

HAYAKAWA: No wonder GoldMask was after it...

YAMANE: We had it brought in from Hong Kong at the request of a French buyer... we have to get it to Haneda Airport so it can reach France by tomorrow.

HAYAKAWA: You want me to guard it?

YAMANE: If you would.

YAMANE: Obviously, I've asked the police, too. The Goldbadge Cartel thinks they have the real one. The police think so too. But theirs is a fake.

HAYAKAWA: I see. So it's a decoy to send the enemy in the wrong direction.

YAMANE: Only I know about it. You're the only one I can turn to.

HAYAKAWA: Very well. But I have a condition. I want you to take care of Shizuka here.

0:09:42
SIGN: New King Hotel

HAYAKAWA: This way, please.

MIDORI: Osamu!

OSAMU: Midori!

MIDORI: A bellhop uniform? Are you working here now?

OSAMU: Yeah.

MIDORI: What's wrong?

OSAMU: The bellboy who just passed by looked like Mr. Hayakawa.

MIDORI: You must have him wrong. Why would Mr. Hayakawa have a job here?

HAYAKAWA: Those men are after Shizuka. And you, and Ichiro too... so I don't want you anywhere near the car.

YAMANE: I promise, we won't.

HAYAKAWA: And Shizuka... you'll be staying in the next room over. I chose the room personally, so no one else will know you're there.

SHIZUKA: Thank you... for all you've done.

0:11:12
HAYAKAWA: They knew that the real one was in this car... how could they have known?

HAYAKAWA: Then they might be in the hotel, too...

HAYAKAWA: Mr. Yamane! Mr. Yamane!

HAYAKAWA: Ichiro! Stay with us!

HAYAKAWA: How did they know we were here!?

HAYAKAWA: Shizuka... did they hurt you?

HAYAKAWA: Shizuka!

YAMANE: Ichiro... don't give up! Ichiro! It's going to be alright! Ichiro! Don't give up! Stay with me!

SIGN: Surgery In Progress

YAMANE: Hayakawa... you said the hotel would be safe! Then how... did you see what happened to Ichiro!?

HAYAKAWA: Please forgive me... I take full responsibility.

YAMANE: I'm sorry for what I said... it isn't your fault. It's mine.

0:13:05
EYECATCH: The Magnificent Zuvatt

BOSS: Fool!

GOLDMASK: Boss L! Why are you hitting me!?

BOSS: Where is the Golden Angel!? Is it still in Hayakawa Ken's hands!? If you are truly a member of the evil organization Dakkar... you will kill Hayakawa without fail! Get him in your power, make him suffer! And then kill him without mercy!

GOLDMASK: Boss L! You have no need to tell me... Hayakawa's life is but a candle in the wind!

GOLDMASK: Let me tell you... the lovely little spy I've been keeping up my sleeve is with him right now!

0:14:08
HAYAKAWA: I removed the bullets earlier.

SHIZUKA: How... how did you know?

HAYAKAWA: The location of the real angel... that we were hiding out in the hotel... who else could have told them?

SHIZUKA: If you knew... then why!?

HAYAKAWA: I wanted to see if you were really the kind of woman who could kill in cold blood.

0:14:58
HAYAKAWA: Shizuka...

HAYAKAWA: Who's there!? Shizuka!

HAYAKAWA: Shizuka!

SHIZUKA: Mr. Hayakawa... I'm so happy... I met you...

HAYAKAWA: Shizuka!

HAYAKAWA: If that evil organization is behind this... Shizuka, I swear will destroy them!

GANG: What do you want!?

HAYAKAWA: Killer Joe! I didn't think you were the kind of beast to knife a woman... and from behind, even...

JOE: Che cosa? What is it, Signore Hayakawa?

HAYAKAWA: Don't play dumb. Shizuka is dead... and I know you killed her!

JOE: I don't know what you're talking about. But if you're spoiling for a fight...

JOE: Magnifico, baby. But try this technique on for size.

JOE: I'll pierce your heart with this heart!

HAYAKAWA: How dare you...

JOE: Io have never... killed a woman...

0:17:27
HAYAKAWA: GoldMask! Are you the one who killed Shizuka!?

GOLDMASK: And her brother, that pesky reporter, too!

HAYAKAWA: How dare you...

GOLDMASK: Oh! Watch yourself there, kiddo.

GOLDMASK: Don't kill him right off, boys. We need to make him suffer, first. Do it!

GANG: Take that!

GANG: Get up!

0:18:28
GOLDMASK: You ridiculous fool! I've something I'd like to show you... the Golden Angel. It was considerate of you to drive it here for us. Open it!

GOLDMASK: Ah! He tricked us!

GOLDMASK: Hayakawa's gone! Men! Find and kill him!

GOLDMASK: Wh-what's that sound!?

0:19:17
GOLDMASK: Who do you think you are!?

HAYAKAWA: Zu-VATT, I'm on the scene! Zu-VATT, I solve the case! They call me the wandering hero... the Magnificent Zuvatt!

GOLDMASK: Magnificent Zuvatt!?

HAYAKAWA: You killed a reporter who learned of your gold thefts... you hurt a father and son who had done you no harm, and you even killed Shizuka! GoldMask... you will pay!

GOLDMASK: Stop, I'll give you anything I own! Just spare me! A golden chest! A golden ashtray! Or perhaps... a golden gun!

HAYAKAWA: GoldMask! I want none of the fruits of your evil... allow me to return it!

[Insert Song]
Zu-VATT, I'm on the scene! Zu-VATT, I solve the case!
Zu-VATT, I'm on the scene! Zu-VATT, I solve the case!
Since the day when I saw that view of hell
The only wind that I feel on my face
Is a wind of revenge, a burning wind!
Hunt them down! Hunt them down, and corner them!

Zu-VATT, I'm on the scene! Zu-VATT, I solve the case!
My friend, my dear friend!
My friend, please watch my howling whip!

I am the Magnificent Zuvatt!

HAYAKAWA: You killed Asuka Goro, didn't you!?

GOLDMASK: I didn't!

HAYAKAWA: Liar!

GOLDMASK: I killed Shizuka, but... I've never known a man named Asuka Goro!

HAYAKAWA: What's that!?

HAYAKAWA: Just one minute left...

HAYAKAWA: Tell me the truth!

HAYAKAWA: Zuvatt Attack!!

0:21:38
HAYAKAWA: This isn't the man who killed Asuka.

CARD: This is the man behind the murders.

TOJO: Take him away.

POLICE: Sir!

0:22:18
TOJO: Hayakawa. The real Golden Angel reached Haneda, just as you asked.

HAYAKAWA: Thank you.

HAYAKAWA: Asuka... I swear I will find the man who killed you!

YAMANE: Ichiro. I'm so glad you're feeling better.

MIDORI: Mr. Hayakawa!

OSAMU: Mr. Hayakawa!

MIDORI: Mr. Hayakawa!

[Ending Theme]
There is a road that a man must walk
That road is his to walk alone
When he devotes his life to a burning wish
He seeks what lies beyond the mountains

Through love and truth and suffering
The way of battle is like the fires of hell
And though he does not know what lies beyond...
That road is his to walk alone

Translation: Daimajin Kanon Episode 16

Here's Ep 16 of Kanon, which is low on music (at least, lyrics-wise) and high on food porn.

The soup Kanon makes (translated here as "taro stew") is also known as imoni, a Northern Japanese specialty made of sliced beef, taro (a type of potato), konjac (a stiff gelatin-like substance), gobou (burdock root), and naganegi (those long onion things you inevitably see people carrying or slicing in all Japanese entertainment). It sounds so good and so Japanese I'm going to have to stop by the Asian market and make it tomorrow. If only naganegi weren't impossible to find here.

More food porn is the mention of Yonezawa beef, a Yamagatan type of wagyu (high-quality Japanese beef) considered to be on the level of the more well-known Kobe beef.

Also in this episode: Kotaro somehow managing to compress 15 episodes' worth of assholery into a single line.

Enjoy!

NARRATION: This is the story of a girl who struggled with her faith in people, then used her singing voice to summon a miracle. A 21st century fable.

[Opening song]
Someone tells you
Lies like they're true
Someone betrays you
To hide their weakness
In the never-ending flow of tears
A reason for living will show itself
Got to live your life
Believin' in these evil times
Sing your heart out
When you feel the love
A song that reflects you
As far as your voice can carry...
Let it ring!
Sing your heart out
When you feel the love
It will surely reach
The hearts of all, some day...
Forces harmonize
You will find the prize
Just sing your heart out

NARRATOR: Kanon was afraid of finding her own life in Tokyo, but felt a push at her back through the tenacity of Saki, and the words of her father who arrives in Tokyo. For the first time, she began to think she could face the Prayer Song.

NARRATOR: Meanwhile, the Ipadada was gradually acquiring new power.

TITLE: Valued Sound

KANON: Ow... What the heck are ya doin'!?

FATHER: We're goin' to sleep. Turn off the light.

KANON: You go to sleep! I'm about to start writin' lyrics.

FATHER: I always told you, early to bed and early to rise.

FATHER: You can't sleep with the light on!

KANON: I'm not goin' to bed yet. You can see that much!

FATHER: C'mon, night is for sleepin'.

KANON: Stop treatin' me like a kid!

FATHER: You're still my kid!

KANON: Am not! I can't be a kid forever!

FATHER: Whatever you say, you'll be my kid forever.

0:03:38
KANON: Thank you!

TAIHEI: It's nothing! But I might not be able to pick you up today.

KANON: Oh, that's fine!

TAIHEI: There's a favor I gotta do for someone...

KANON: I understand.

TAIHEI: Looks like they're havin' fun...

KANON: Yeah...

KANON: Bye!

TAIHEI: Have a good day!

0:04:26
TAIHEI: Yeah. The day when Kanon's awakens Bujin with her voice might just be drawin' near.

0:04:46
COOK: Take these, please.

KANON: Sure.

KANON: Sorry for the wait. Spaghetti with meat sauce.

KANON: Please enjoy your meal.

0:05:25
SALARYMAN: Hey, look here now! I can't concentrate!

SALARYMAN: Please, just cut it out! Have a little sympathy!

KANON: Excuse me sir, may I help you?

0:05:45
KANON: Kurara?

MANAGER: Yeah, apparently she's great on the piano.

MANAGER: You saw her playing air-piano on the table, right?

KANON: Oh!

MANAGER: I've seen posters for her recitals around in this area, too.

KANON: Oh, really!

MANAGER: But her mother is a very strict person, she probably has her in an intensive training regimen.

KANON: Oh?

MANAGER: Her mother came in here with her once. Ow ow ow...

MANAGER: She really left an impression...

KANON: Did she seem pushy at all?

MANAGER: No, more... composed.

KANON: Oh...

0:06:26
OTAKI: I'm home!

IKECHIYO: Otaki!

IKECHIYO: Taihei and Tomosuke should be moving the Host back to his home right about now.

IKECHIYO: He himself is still sleeping, but hopefully he won't remember anything of what happened.

OTAKI: I just can't believe the Host was the man who stole Kanon's song...

IKECHIYO: I tried hard to make sure no trace of the Ipadada's grudge remained inside him, but...

OTAKI: I'm sure your hard work won't be in vain.

0:07:41
KOTARO: No way! I slept for four days straight!?

KOTARO: Talk about a power nap... I'm pretty awesome!

KANON: The Prayer Song?

0:09:40
KANON: You're Kurara, right? I work at the cafe... I love the way you played that song, just now. You really love the piano, don't you?

0:10:10
IKECHIYO: But Jyuzo really had a run at this place, didn't he?

OTAKI: Why do you think I tried to end my search for a substitute as early as possible?

OTAKI: Oh, but that Jyuzo... I wish he could be just a little more responsible... ahh!

IKECHIYO: What is it?

OTAKI: Damn that old man! He drank all my cooking wine!

TAIHEI: Hey! Welcome back!

TOMOSUKE: We're back! ... Ah!

OTAKI: How's the Host?

TAIHEI: Safely returned!

OTAKI: Great! Now go buy me some wine!

TAIHEI: Okay. Rock-paper-scissors! Rock-paper-scissors! Rock-paper-scissors!

TOMOSUKE: YEEEEAH!!

0:11:14
TAIHEI: Oh, wow... hmm? What's this thing?

KANON: Taihei!

TAIHEI: Oh, hey Kanon!

KANON: What are you doing here?

TAIHEI: What about you?

KANON: Just stocking up for the house.

TAIHEI: Oh, I see. You're makin' taro stew, huh?

KANON: Did you finish what you needed to do?

TAIHEI: Yeah, I finished. But then Otaki sent me out to buy some cooking wine.

KANON: That's this way!

0:12:00
TAIHEI: Oh hey, Yonezawa beef!

SIGN: Yamagata Specialty Fair, special sale

TAIHEI: Oh, oh, no thanks!

TAIHEI: Huh?

TAIHEI: Hey now, don't you take things that don't belong to you!

KURARA: What are you doing!? Child molester!

TAIHEI: Wait a second, I didn't...

KANON: Kurara...

0:12:50
SIGN: Manager's Room

KURARA: I wasn't shoplifting. That guy just grabbed my wrist. Are you denying that?

TAIHEI: I won't deny I grabbed it...

POLICEMAN: Excuse me.

POLICEMAN: It's not clear from the camera angle.

MANAGER: And it doesn't look like anything was missing...

TAIHEI: Th-That's because I put it back!

KURARA: He's lying.

TAIHEI: She's the one that's lyin'.

MANAGER: What are we going to do?

KANON: I know Taihei looks a little weird... but he wouldn't do anything like that. I don't think this girl is the type to be shoplifting, either.

KURARA: How can you say that? You don't even know me.

KURARA: Mama...

MAMA: You go to take a walk and this is what happens? Come on.

MANAGER: Wait a minute, we have to talk...

MAMA: There's nothing to talk about.

MANAGER: Excuse me, you don't have to say it like that.

MAMA: Then how would you like me to say it? Tell me!

TAIHEI: H-Hey, just a minute... we still have a problem, here!

MAMA: What problem, exactly?

TAIHEI: What problem!? Everything you've done is a problem!

KANON: Taihei...

MAMA: Let me tell you something. You people are the problem here! Locking my daughter up in this filthy little room... calling me here!? What do you want? What do you want me to do!? Tell me!!

TAIHEI: Shut the hell up!! You need to act like a mother!

MAMA: No matter how I act, I am her mother!

MAMA: I think we're done here. Let's go.

KANON: Wait a minute!

MAMA: What, is there more?

KANON: You're being so selfish!

MAMA: Haven't we been through this? You're the ones being selfish.

MAMA: Let's go.

KURARA: It hurts...

MAMA: What hurts!?

KURARA: My hand... my hand won't move!

0:15:25
TAMEKICHI: This is terrible...

HASHITAKA: The Ipadada got everyone here...

SAWAMORI: His power must be incredible by now...

SAWAMORI: Are you okay!? You're Kaenji, aren't you? Hang in there!

0:15:57
KANON: I thought you were pretty self-centered, dad, but this Kurara girl's mother takes the cake. I don't think she thinks of anyone but herself. It's crazy.

FATHER: How am I self-centered? Everything I do is for you, y'know.

KANON: You were just sayin' the taro stew I made just for you wasn't good enough! Even though you're takin' seconds...

FATHER: That's not self-centered. I did that for you.

KANON: No, it is self-centered!

FATHER: Then you got a funny definition of it. Besides, everyone's self-centered.

KANON: That's not true.

FATHER: That's just you bein' naive.

KANON: What's that s'posed to mean? You gotta stop bein' so negative all the time, dad.

FATHER: Oh yeah? Well what're you gonna do, for all your huffin' around?

KANON: I dunno if I can do anything. But I gotta try, at least.

FATHER: If you end up hurtin' that girl even more, are you gonna take responsibility?

KANON: Responsibility?

FATHER: If you're prepared for that, I won't say nothin' more.

KANON: Then don't say nothin' more.

0:17:25
KAENJI: It's been about eight years since I arrived here. The people were so kind to me...

KAENJI: Hey! Are you okay? Get out of here!

KAENJI: How could I stand up to power like that? Just what kind of person was that Ipadada!?

SAWAMORI: I saw his memories when he was inside of me. He's the spirit of the executed criminal, Saiki Kento.

ARTICLE: Sentence carried out on murderer of family of five.

ARTICLE: "I need to kill more people. Anyone will do."

SAWAMORI: I don't know what he hated or what he had a grudge against. But deep beneath that permeating hatred... there lay an unspeakable fear.

KAENJI: Fear...

TAMEKICHI: At any rate, it's hard to have sympathy after what he did.

HASHITAKA: Animal children don't kill their parents. Why is it something only humans do?

0:19:05
OTAKI: That boy's getting you into all kinds of trouble, Kanon.

TAIHEI: Hey, I didn't do anything!

OTAKI: But what was she talking about, saying her hand hurts all of a sudden?

KANON: I don't know. I offered to take her to the hospital, and her mother just yelled at me.

OTAKI: That mother seems like a very peculiar woman. I'd like to meet her once myself!

TAIHEI: Nothin' to laugh about!

OTAKI: Excuse me, we're not open for business just yet.

TAIHEI: Speak of the devil.

OTAKI: What?

TAIHEI: Speak of the devil, I said!

MAMA: What are you going to do?

TAIHEI: About what?

MAMA: Because of your brutish treatment of my daughter, she can't play piano anymore!

TAIHEI: What!?

TAIHEI: Come on, I barely touched her...

MAMA: Barely touched her? She's a very delicate girl! If she can't play piano anymore, it's your responsibility.

TAIHEI: My responsibility!?

OTAKI: And how is he supposed to take responsibility for something like this? With money?

TAIHEI: We don't like to brag about it, but this shop's completely broke.

OTAKI: Don't tell her that!

MAMA: At any rate, you'll be taking responsibility. That girl has no life outside of her piano!

0:21:12
OTAKI: What a poisonous attitude. That's not something a real mother would say.

TAIHEI: Yeah.

TOMOSUKE: I really feel sorry for the daughter.

OTAKI: Mothers should raise their children with kindness, to do what they love!

0:21:45
TAIHEI: Kanon...

KANON: I want to find her and talk to her.

OTAKI: You're really worried about her?

KANON: I can tell she loves music. But if she can't play because of how she's feeling...

TAIHEI: ... you're thinkin' she's just like you?

KANON: Yeah. So I want to help her out.

SIGN: Yose

KURARA: If you're looking for my mother, she's not here.

KURARA: Listen... why? Why are you so concerned about me? Why?

[Ending Song]
When I look up, I can still see stars
In the strip of sky between the buildings
Faintly, but I love them
Those little interwoven points of light
I'll send positive words for kindness in the future
And leave my sadness to the wind!
I'm walking home again today
'til I can walk to the place where he waits for me
I'm walking home with that song on my lips
Because I want to smile up at the blue skies
And so, I'm taking my time with my dreams

NARRATOR: Kanon works to make Kurara's dreams come true. Kaenji is possessed by the Ipadada and sees the blackness of its heart. And Baroku is frank with Kanon...
