Translation: Daimajin Kanon Episode 12

Last night I finally watched the last two Daimajin movies. I can now say with certainty that this is a really awesome film trilogy, definitely worthy of the awesome series treatment it's getting. I've never been able to get into kaiju flicks before, but there's something about Daimajin that conveys a really visceral sense of both horror and justice.

(The fact that they're basically 90 minutes of gorgeous scenery and Warring States era costume porn doesn't hurt, either. I'd love to have those films on Blu-Ray. The practical effects are phenomenal.)

As for the episode itself, I have no notes to offer, except that those of you who have been longing for some action for the last couple eps should finally get your fill!

1/5/2011 Edit: Changed the episode title, because I'm an idiot. This is what happens when I don't double-check my kanji.

11/13/2011 Edit: Changed "Fukamatsu" to "Fukumatsu." Damn my stupid fingers!

NARRATION: This is the story of a girl who struggled with her faith in people, then used her singing voice to summon a miracle. A 21st century fable.

[Opening song]
Someone hurts you
With heartless words
Makes you wanna give up
There's no more kindness
Someone will use that to trap you
You must find yourself and fight them
Got to live your life
Believin' in these evil times
Sing your heart out
Don't worry, Just shout
A song that reflects you
Don't hide your kindness
Let us hear it!
Sing your heart out
Don't worry, Just shout
Pushing the sadness from your heart
Takes true strength
Forces harmonize
Stand by your side
Just sing your heart out

NARRATOR: The kind-hearted and spectacular Onbake, Bujin, has entered into a long slumber. In order to revive him, Taihei sought out Kanon, the heir to the Prayer Song.

NARRATOR: Though Kanon has been unable to truly sing the Prayer Song, Taihei has continued to keep gentle watch over her.

TITLE: Chapter 12, "Grateful Change"

[The Layoff Song]
Life is full of hard knocks!
Isn't it exhausting?
Before you even know it
You're all alone in the world
What's that about?
There's people all around you!
No matter who you're with
You hide how you really feel
What's that about?
Sometimes it's okay to just let out a yell!
You see, it's really simple!
If you have a little faith!
You see, it's just so simple!

TAIHEI: Okay! My personal opinion is that people need to trust each other. But it seems a lot of people have stopped doing that lately! Right, Mori?

MORIYA: Yeah. I've experienced it! I got laid off because of a personal grudge! It really made me question my faith in humanity!

TAIHEI: But that's a sad thought! Hey! Ain't that sad?!

KANON: I've struggled with my trust in people since I came to the city. So Taihei's trusting lifestyle was really appealing. But...

SCREEN: Delete this video?

SCREEN: Video deleted.

KANON: Taihei, who works so hard for other people, was betrayed by someone he trusted...

KANON: And when I got worried and went to Dai-chan to check on him...

KANON: I always thought he and his friends dressed strangely... but I never would have guessed they weren't human!

ENVELOPE: To Kanon, from Ikechiyo

[Ikechiyo's Letter]
Hi, Kanon.

This is Ikechiyo.

Did you sleep well last night? I don't imagine you would, after seeing Taihei like that. He didn't mean you any harm, but we're sorry that he frightened you.

I told you a little bit about Onbake already, but I'll try to explain further. We are objects given new life by the love showed to us by humans. Taihei is a helmet, Tomosuke is a dog, Sawamori is a crayfish, Hashitaka is a hawk, Otaki is a cauldron, and I am a goldfish Onbake.

I'm sure you won't believe that objects can be transformed and given life only through the power of love and gratitude, but... our feelings are no different from those of humans.

IKECHIYO: So Kanon, please believe that this changes nothing about our feelings toward you. We all love you, Kanon.

IKECHIYO: Taihei's feeling a little down about it all, so I'm writing this letter for him. -Ikechiyo.

KANON: Taihei...

KANON: Taihei!

TAIHEI: Kanon! Um... how did you know I was here?

KANON: I stopped by Dai-chan. Ikechiyo told me.

TAIHEI: I see. Oh... here, Kanon.

TAIHEI: This is our friend, Buchinko. You haven't been introduced yet, have you?

KANON: Right.

KANON: He's so cute!

TAIHEI: Sounds like he knows you pretty well, though.

KANON: I'm sorry about yesterday.

TAIHEI: Well, that's my true face. Bet it was pretty shocking!

KANON: Well, I was just so surprised... I didn't know what to think.

TAIHEI: Don't worry about it.

KANON: But, Taihei... yesterday must have been so hard on you.

TAIHEI: A little...

TAIHEI: But that's the price you pay for dreaming.

KANON: Um...

KANON: Stop looking so darn depressed! Let's go to Dai-chan!

KANON: Times like this, you gotta fill up your stomach before you can think! Now come on! Let's get you an extra-large ramen! My treat!

TAIHEI: Well... how could I refuse such a kind offer!

TAIHEI: But earlier you said it was this way... this is east.

TOMOSUKE: No, I said left. That's west.

TAIHEI: But left is east.

TOMOSUKE: No, see, right is east, and left is... this hand.

TOMOSUKE: So then you just go straight...

IKECHIYO: Stop it. I told you, I'll get him.

TAIHEI: What are you talking about? Jyuzo's entrusted the secret mission to me, personally! Right?

TAIHEI: Right?

OTAKI: What's a secret between Jyuzo and Taihei?

TAIHEI: I mean really. You wannt go walking through the middle of town looking like that? You're an eyesore!

IKECHIYO: What?! Why are you concerned with that all of a sudden?

TAIHEI: It's shameful.

TOMOSUKE: Well, it is a little slutty.

TAIHEI: Anyway, I'm off!

IKECHIYO: What's wrong with you!

HASHITAKA: I guess you'll be heading off soon.

OTAKI: I'm sorry I'll be missing all the fun.

SAWAMORI: I'm sorry, ma'am. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have to go looking for a substitute...

OTAKI: This is my duty, Sawamori.

HASHITAKA: We'll still try our hardest to defeat the Ipadada while you're away.

OTAKI: We'll all be happier if you don't end up needing my help. Isn't that right, sir?

TOBEI: Did you call me? Did you call me?

TOBEI: That's right! And now that I am here, all will be well!

KANON: All finished.

KANON: I have a day off from work and school today. So I decided to stop by Dai-chan to thank Ikechiyo for her letter.

KANON: I'm sorry... that's just...

SHOUTA: Hi, Buchinko!

JYUZO: Hey, Buchinko!

KANON: Um...

JYUZO: What?

SHOUTA: What is it?

KANON: Do you know each other?

JYUZO: Might you be the Songstress?

HASHITAKA: We're so glad you're here!

JYUZO: My my, it's been so long!

SAWAMORI: It's a good thing you ran into Kanon.

JYUZO: Yes, your little Songstress saved me indeed!

KANON: Oh, i-it's nothing...

OTAKI: Jyuzo, a word.

JYUZO: What? I just thought it was nice that the Songstress came to see me after my trip from Yamagata...

TOMOSUKE: But then... I wonder when Taihei's getting back?

KANON: Oh... isn't he here?

MORISAWA: He went out to meet Jyuzo. I guess he missed him.

JYUZO: What? You're gonna look for a substitute?

JYUZO: But why? If it's about the Ipadada, you know Taihei's already found that sweet little Songstress out there...

OTAKI: Listen. Have you even asked that girl how she feels?

JYUZO: I've heard a couple things about some problems, but nothing all that serious...

OTAKI: She's still in the process of finding herself. She's a very sweet girl, though. Some day, I'm sure she'll be able to sing a song that will reach Bujin.

JYUZO: Then why are you goin' out on this dang journey!?

OTAKI: I just feel like we have to start taking matters into our own hands.

JYUZO: I don't understand a damn thing that's goin' on...

OTAKI: Now Jyuzo, don't do anything stupid while I'm gone. Try to act your age, for once!

OTAKI: Thank you. I'm off.

ALL: Good luck! Take care!

OTAKI: You take care too, dear.

ALL: Good luck, Otaki! Be careful, Otaki!

TOMOSUKE: The world's a scary place so please be careful! Come back soon!

KAZAHANA: Ipadada to the north-north-west!

HASHITAKA: That's near the public highway.

TOBEI: Let us be off!

TOBEI: Be back later!

IKECHIYO: Be careful!

SHOUTA: An Onbake's job is to protect people. They also work at stopping Ipadadas.

MAN: All clear!

MAN: Okay!

MAN: Okay, I think I'm all clear.

HASHITAKA: Tomosuke!

TOMOSUKE: Dogs! Dogs!

IKECHIYO: Dog... crayfish... goldfish. That's one's me. Do you understand?

JYUZO: Listen. A human who dies with a deep grudge will reincarnate as an evil spirit. They appear every dozen years or so. We call these evil spirits 'Ipadada.'

KANON: Ipadada?

JYUZO: Yes. And extermination of Ipadada -- like the one just now -- is the duty of Sawamori and the others.

KANON: I see! I thought the Onbake might fight each other or something like that.

JYUZO: Not at all. Onbake always trust each other. But Ipadada are very evil humans. And so to protect the greatest amount of people... I think you understand.

KANON: Evil humans?

JYUZO: Yes. And that's why with this Ipadada, your and Taihei's duty will be...

IKECHIYO: Jyuzo! I think that's enough for now. By the way, Taihei is late.

KANON: He is...

KANON: It's Taihei!

KANON: Oh... excuse me.

WAKAMATSU: Not at all...

IKECHIYO: I'm sorry sir, we're closed today.

WAKAMATSU: Actually... I'm looking for Otaki or Sawamori...

IKECHIYO: They're not in...

FUKUMATSU: Is that so?

IKECHIYO: Is that... Fukumatsu?!

TOMOSUKE: I'm so sorry! Next one...

TOBEI: This one is mine! Anal penetration attack!!

TOBEI: Magnificent. Hashitaka, it is time!

TOMOSUKE: Ouchie! No good.

HASHITAKA: Sawamori, here!

IKECHIYO: I see. And that's how you met Fukumatsu?

WAKAMATSU: It's been a while since we had a ramen here together, so I thought it would be nice.

IKECHIYO: I'm so sorry.

WAKAMATSU: Not at all.

FUKUMATSU: Just seeing you is enough for me, Ikechiyo.

WAKAMATSU: Um... I'm sorry to ask, but...

IKECHIYO: Oh, this is Misaki Kanon. She's a human just like you.

KANON: Nice to meet you.

WAKAMATSU: Nice to meet you. I'm Wakamatsu.

IKECHIYO: Kanon just learned about Onbake the other day.

WAKAMATSU: Oh, really! That must have been quite a shock.

KANON: Yeah... I'm still getting used to it.

WAKAMATSU: I know the feeling.

KANON: Taihei!

TOBEI: Do not flinch.

SAWAMORI: Looks like you're out of firepower.

SAWAMORI: Take this!

TOBEI: Whoops!

HASHITAKA: Sawamori!

TOMOSUKE: Ow! My nose!

TOMOSUKE: My nose again! My nose...

SAWAMORI: Tomosuke! Tomosuke!

HASHITAKA: Tomosuke!

TOBEI: Let me see. Here we go...

TOBEI: Plonk!

[Ending Theme]
Hey, why don't you show your real feelings?
Outside the window, the rain is falling
The town seems like it's carved from ice
So cold you'd freeze just from touching it
Closing your eyes, you pray for some kindness
Are you waiting for blue skies like the ones in your dream?
Tomorrow, that's what you'll see

NARRATION: Kanon speaks with the young man who knows about Onbake. The Ipadada sinks its fangs into Sawamori. And Jyuzo's tearful revelation...

NARRATION: Next time: Misplaced Resentment
