Translation: Daimajin Kanon Episode 14

Life has been busy lately, but it would be pretty bad if I went through all of November without a post! So, here's Kanon 14!

The main reason this episode took so long is that I was truly stumped by Ikechiyo's "gentle goldfish lullaby," sung toward the end of the episode. I regret to report that in the end, I was still unable to decipher it. She appears to be singing in some kind of dialect, or perhaps with foreign words mixed in, because I simply can't make heads or tails of it. The only word I'm certain of is "Yorishiro" near the very end, which is the word I usually translate as "Host."

At any rate, I don't want to let one song keep a script that was otherwise 95% done from seeing the light of day. If a CD with Kanon music comes out, or kanji lyrics appear on the net somewhere, I'll add a translation in later. Apologies in the meantime for any inconvenience.

In other news -- new OP and ED! More properly, a second-verse OP with new footage, and a new ED by the same artist as before. A pretty good way of keeping things recognizable while allowing for the change in tone, I think.

Anyway, enjoy the episode below the cut!

NARRATION: This is the story of a girl who struggled with her faith in people, then used her singing voice to summon a miracle. A 21st century fable.

[Opening song]
Someone tells you
Lies like they're true
Someone betrays you
To hide their weakness
In the never-ending flow of tears
A reason for living will show itself
Got to live your life
Believin' in these evil times
Sing your heart out
When you feel the love
A song that reflects you
As far as your voice can carry...
Let it ring!
Sing your heart out
When you feel the love
It will surely reach
The hearts of all, some day...
Forces harmonize
You will find the prize
Just sing your heart out

NARRATOR: The Onbake captured the Ipadada and attempted to seal it. But it broke the seal with the force of its grudge, and ran wild. Sawamori and the others then set out to capture the Ipadada.

NARRATOR: Meanwhile, speaking to a young man named Wakamatsu restored a bit more of Kanon's faith in people.

TITLE: Obscured Sound

JYUZO: Here!

TOMOSUKE: Yay! Thanks.

JYUZO: How is it?

TOMOSUKE: Otaki's ramen tastes like a mother's care. But... your ramen tastes like... an irascible old man... waking up after a hundred year slumbAAAAGH!!

TOMOSUKE: What did you put in this!?

JYUZO: Hey! Not again!

TAIHEI: Nothing, nothing!

TAIHEI: Just spit it out if you want.

JYUZO: How's the host?

IKECHIYO: He's through the worst of it. I think he needs a bit more rest, though.

JYUZO: Oh, good. By the way, seems you're workin' real hard. You oughta take a rest.

IKECHIYO: Thank you. But after a short break, it's back to watching over him. I can't stop until he's better.

GRANDMA: Listen, Kanon. There's no truly bad people in this world. Don't worry. I'm sure you'll be able to make friends with her. So don't you cry.

KANON: Gramma! Gramma, gramma!

GRANDMA: What's goin' on? My, what an energetic girl you are!

KANON: Gramma, I made friends with Shouko!

KANON: I told her what happened an' she understood!

GRANDMA: Is that so! How nice.

GRANDMA: Be honest and true, and they'll return your kindness. That's just how folks are.

KANON: Grandma... I still treasure your words.

TOMOSUKE: But won't the police arrest him? His body was used to kill people, after all.

JYUZO: No, they won't be after him. Listen, his soul and body were those of a different man when he committed those crimes.

TAIHEI: I don't think Kanon would be happy if she knew he was the one behind it. She did used to date him.

JYUZO: Maybe... it would be better if we don't tell her about it.

TAIHEI: Yeah. I'd rather pretend like it just didn't happen.

JYUZO: Taihei. We can't underestimate the Ipadada's power! In order to get Bujin ready to fight him soon...

TAIHEI: ... 'you gotta turn that darn girl into the Songstress soon!'... right?

JYUZO: Right.

TAIHEI: C'mon, I want Bujin back as much as you do... there's only so much I can do...

TAIHEI: Hello?

TAIHEI: Oh, Kanon!

TAIHEI: What, right now? Sure, I'm on my way.

TAIHEI: She called me!

FUJITA: I can't get ahold of him. You three will have to cover it. Oh, so good to hear from you!

SAKI: What is that idiot thinking!

SHINYA: Calm down, Saki. It's not like it's the first time he's done this.

SAKI: But we're professionals now!

SHINYA: When he gets into his songwriting, he forgets the outside world.

SAKI: But it's backwards to neglect actual concerts for that!

SHINYA: Then maybe he's with a girl again.

IKKI: Hey, don't joke around about that!

[Prayer Song]
When the sound of the bell
Rings through the village
All the birds, together,
Fly back to the mountain

SAKI: I'm sorry, Kotaro's... not here today. I'm sorry, I really am! But the three of us will give you 120% in his place!

[To the Top]
The sound of the rain
Makes the town cry
But I just need an umbrella
To keep me from crying

[Prayer Song]
How much warmer will we feel?

KANON: How was it?

TAIHEI: Hmm... there's still somethin' off. How do I say... your whole heart isn't in it yet.

KANON: I think you're right. Meeting a trustworthy person like Wakamatsu made me believe I could sing it again, but...

KANON: The dawn feels so far...

TAIHEI: Gives you a pretty different outlook, huh?

KANON: Yeah.

TAIHEI: Good. Everyone needs a pick-me-up sometimes.

KANON: But... could we get down now? It's a little embarrassing...

TAIHEI: Hey...

KANON: When Taihei comes by, will you tell him? I'm going to try to be brave, and live on my own for a while.

KANON: Tell him it's because of all he's done for me.

HASHITAKA: It's so good!

SAWAMORI: I'm sure this is the place.

HASHITAKA: Yumonji said it was the biggest park-and-ride in Ibaraki Prefecture...

SAWAMORI: He's late. I figured Tamekichi would get here long before us.

TAMEKICHI: Sorry about that!

SAWAMORI: Tamekichi!

TAMEKICHI: Yeah, I'm real sorry! Check it out, I went to Ibaraki, but it was the one in Osaka! Can you believe it!?

TAMEKICHI: That hurts, Sawamori! Hey, if you're gonna tell me where to meet, you gotta be specific! We used to be partners, yanno!

HASHITAKA: You used to be partners!? Wow!

TAMEKICHI: That's right! Even a big-shot like him needed someone to show him the ropes!

SAWAMORI: That is not the way it happened...

TAMEKICHI: Anyway, let's get down to business.

TAMEKICHI: Give us the benefit of your expertise, good sir!

DOUKAN: Listen well, Tamekichi, Sawamori, Hashitaka!

DOUKAN: Once this job is over, I want some of that soft-serve ice cream.

DOUKAN: Matsuzaki!

TAMEKICHI: Then that's where the Ipadada is!

DOUKAN: This gets harder every year...

SISTER: What? I thought we were hanging out today.

SAKI: Sorry, I changed my mind.

SISTER: What, why? Where are you going?

SAKI: To the club at Keiyo.

SISTER: Why can't you skip it today?

SAKI: I really am sorry... somehow, I can't get into To The Top anymore...

SAKI: So I want to return to the band's roots.

KANON: That song was originally... my family's song. But then Kotaro took it for his own.

SAKI: Excuse me, Mr. Fujita. There's something I have to say.

FUJITA: Just hold that thought! Check it out!

IKKI: No way! #9? Seriously?

SAKI: Listen, everyone.

SAKI: Our song, To the Top is...

FANS: Saki! What is it? Saki? Saki!

FANS: Saki! Saki! Saki!

[To the Top]
The sound of the rain...

TAIHEI: Good morning! Kanon-chan! It's time for school!

TAIHEI: Oh, Buchinko!

TAIHEI: What's that? She left already? Oh... is that what she said?

TAIHEI: But I am worried about her, so I'm gonna go see her.

KOTARO: Well, this song is for the freshmen out there. If you like this, please come join our club.

KOTARO: We're still looking for a vocalist to sing this song.

SAKI: You want me to lead the band?

FUJITA: Yeah, I want to form a new 0°C. Truth is, a disturbing complaint came up about Kotaro at the meeting. People have noticed that To the Top resembles a certain old folk song.

FUJITA: Anyway, think about it.

YUMONJI: I couldn't catch the Ipadada.

SAWAMORI: It's not your fault, we're the ones that were late.

YUMONJI: No, but... at least now that Tamekichi's here, we'll be able to follow it.

YUMONJI: Let's work together to beat the Ipadada.

GIRL: Misaki! Misaki!

GIRL: Listen, I talked to Uehara from Keiyo...

KANON: Uehara?

GIRL: Maybe you know her as Saki from 0°C?

GIRL: She wants you to meet her in the gym once class is over.

KANON: Meet me?

[Ikechiyo's Song]

KANON: Taihei!

TAIHEI: Sorry! I had to come.

TAIHEI: Huh? What did she want with you?

KANON: I don't really know.

TAIHEI: You think she's finally gonna apologize?!

TAIHEI: Wait... but if she was gonna do that, why didn't she come right to you? It's gotta be a trick.

KANON: I don't think she's that bad a person.

TAIHEI: No, she definitely is! I'm totally against it!

KANON: Maybe you're right.

KANON: Is it good?

KANON: I wonder what I should do.

KANON: I have to go out again... but it's such a pain.

KANON: ... Did I do the right thing?

SAKI: Misaki!

SAKI: Thank goodness! A girl from class told me... can I have a minute?

KANON: I guess...

SAKI: I... I'm sorry!

SAKI: I kept singing your family song... even though I knew Kotaro stole it.

KANON: Listen...

SAKI: I'm so sorry!

KANON: Please stop!

SAKI: But...

KANON: It's okay! It's not like I wrote that song myself... so don't worry about it.

SAKI: You forgive me?

SAKI: Thank goodness...

SAKI: I have to do another song soon.

KANON: I see.

SAKI: But I'm so bad at it... um... so if it's okay with you...

SAKI: Misaki, will you work with me?

KANON: This is...

SAKI: I'm sorry... I read it all.

KANON: You read it?

SAKI: I loved it. It was all so optimistic. So... I tried to write a song using my favorite one.

KANON: You did?

SAKI: Listen to it... and if you like it, please consider joining up with me.

KANON: I don't... think I can decide that on the spot.

SAKI: If you don't mind... I can sing it for you now.

[Saki Song]
Morning, noon, and rainy nights
Even when they're out of sight
The stars are always up there
Lighting the way for you!

[Ending Song]
When I look up, I can still see stars
In the strip of sky between the buildings
Faintly, but I love them
Those little interwoven points of light
I'll send positive words for kindness in the future
And leave my sadness to the wind!
I'm walking home again today
'til I can walk to the place where he waits for me
I'm walking home with that song on my lips
Because I want to smile up at the blue skies
And so, I'm taking my time with my dreams

NARRATOR: Saki's proposal sets Kanon trembling, and the Ipadada obtains a flame soul drone. Just then, Kanon's father appears in the city!

NARRATOR: Next time: Beautiful Sound
