Translation: Daimajin Kanon Episode 26

... and here we are, at the end of the road!

You'll no doubt see for yourself some of the changes to the formula in this episode, but I hope you'll also note one last small, subtle change to the opening narration.

Apparently the dinner scene in this episode includes a lot of cameos from the show's writing and directing staff. Unfortunately I can't recognize them on sight, myself.

(There is also one rather notable cameo that fans of producer Takadera's previous works should pick on pretty quickly.)

Anyway, I hope you've all enjoyed watching this series as much as I enjoyed translating it. In the next few weeks, I'll be starting on a new translation project, featuring another beloved Japanese giant.

Stay tuned, and enjoy!

NARRATION: This is the story of a girl who chose to have faith in people, then used her singing voice to summon a miracle. A 21st century fable.

0:00:21
KAZAHANA: Taihei! Taihei!

TAIHEI: Oh? What is it?

0:00:34
TOMOSUKE: Why are you looking so nervous?

HASHITAKA: The Ipadada's sealed, isn't it?

SAWAMORI: It worries me that he's keeping so calm inside Gombei.

KAENJI: I agree...

YUMONJI: You're saying it doesn't match what happened when he was inside the two of you?

KAENJI: He's the strongest Ipadada in our recorded history.

SAWAMORI: We can't let down our guard.

0:01:18
SHOUTA: Bujin!

IKECHIYO: Bujin!

IKECHIYO: Honestly. You really are a nasty one, Bujin. Kanon came all the way here to sing for you, and you just turned her away.

BUJIN: I'm sorry I offended her. But why was she so concerned about me?

IKECHIYO: Listen. Kanon went to a city called Tokyo, and had that song stolen from her by some jerk she trusted. But she still worked hard to get back her faith in people and take back her song.

BUJIN: I see...

0:02:03
TAIHEI: The Ipadada... is sealed, thanks to our efforts!

KANON: That's great!

0:02:11
GYOSAKU: Anyway. This is about a month overdue, but I would like to extend my congratulations, and lead a toast to the new couple.

GYOSAKU: A toast to our Baroku, and his new wife, Akari!

0:02:30
TITLE: Grateful Song

AKARI: Kanon, my dear! I look forward to getting to know you.

KANON: Oh no, I'm the honored one!

AKARI: Kanon... I heard you were going to sing a song for us?

KANON: Oh, yes.

BAROKU: You've been working hard on it, right?

MAN: Baroku, Akari, this way!

BAROKU: Okay! We'll ask you later, okay?

KANON: Roger that.

BAROKU: Okay, excuse us.

TAIHEI: I'm taking you to Bujin!

TAIHEI: You stay here and listen to Kanon's song!

0:03:30
BAROKU: Excuse me. I'd like to introduce the girl who ignored her father's worries and went off to Tokyo. Fortunately, she seems to have done a pretty good job working with the music she loves. It's my eldest daughter, Misaki Kanon, and she's been working hard on this song. So I'd like you all to give it a listen. Now, when Iwent off to Tokyo to see her, I...

0:04:17
KANON: I lost my mother when I was very young, but thanks to my grandmother and all of you, I was able to become the person I am today. When I was in Tokyo, I fought with my father a lot. But now I think I understand what he was trying to tell me. Dad... I'm sorry. And... thank you.

BAROKU: What's this, you're makin' me blush.

KANON: I wrote the lyrics for this song because I want to make people happy with my music. So I thought I might sing it for you today.

0:05:21
IKECHIYO: Taihei!

TAIHEI: Bujin!

BUJIN: Is that Taihei?

TAIHEI: Please! Listen to this!

BUJIN: To what?

KANON: Please listen. This is my Prayer Song for you all.

[Kanon's Prayer Song]
The sound of your voice
Is different from mine
But they harmonize so beautifully
When we sing with our eyes to the sky

When the sun shows itself after the rain
It stretches a rainbow across the sky
Some days may still be cloudy, and yet
We can all bring our prayers together

In the skies of tomorrow
We'll see the bonds that we share
In colors so deep, and so strong
That it dazzles the eye

--

The song that I sing for you
Overflows with my feelings
"May you find peace in your life"
That is the message I send

Sometimes a cold wind may blow on your back
And the petals of spring scatter on the wind
But trust that someone will come along
To put a warm arm around you

Let your words ring out
Into tomorrow's sky
Let's all join voices
And sing as one

GYOSAKU: Great job, Kanon!

KANON: Excuse me, excuse me...

FUUGA: The song suits you.

KANON: Thank you, big brother.

0:09:09
SAWAMORI: Soul drones...

SAWAMORI: Kaenji!

IPADADA: I am born anew!

HASHITAKA: This is...

SAWAMORI: A great Ipadada...

TOMOSUKE: It's too big...

KAZAHANA: This is bad...

0:10:16
WOMAN: What is this?

[Kanon's Prayer Song]
When the sun shows itself after the rain
It stretches a rainbow across the sky
Some days may still be cloudy, and yet
We can all bring our prayers together

In the skies of tomorrow
We'll see the bonds that we share
In colors so deep, and so strong
That it dazzles the eye

KANON: Bujin...

KANON: Bujin is... singing...

BUJIN: Kanon, Songstress of Misaki.

KANON: Yes.

BUJIN: I'm sorry for what I said to you. I heard your song.

KANON: Huh?

BUJIN: Taihei saw to it that your song reached me.

KANON: Taihei!

0:11:42
BUJIN: It was a grand song.

KANON: Thank you!

BUJIN: It made me want to sing again. I thank you, Kanon.

KANON: Not at all. It's my pleasure to see you finally in the flesh, Bujin.

TAIHEI: That's the Bujin I knew you'd be.

KAZAHANA: Taihei!

TAIHEI: Hey Kazahana. What's up?

KAZAHANA: The Ipadada has broken the seal!

TAIHEI: The Ipadada...

IKECHIYO: The Ipadada broke Gombei's seal?

BUJIN: Worry not. I will take care of it.

KANON: Bujin!

BUJIN: Hm?

KANON: I want to go!

BUJIN: You?

KANON: Yes! I want to help you, Bujin!

BUJIN: You wish to help me?

0:12:49
BUJIN: Then, sing with me!

BUJIN: Hang on tight.

[Prayer Song]
Can you hear my voice
As it rings across the land?
In the hope that it will reach you
I'm sending my prayer through my song

No one can stand being all alone
But you don't have to bear it all
As long as your voice blends together with mine
I'll follow wherever you go

Let's all just live together
With this bond between us
Surely tomorrow will be
Warmer than before

TAIHEI: Let's go!

BAROKU: What's goin' on?

AKARI: Oh, Baroku! Kanon is...

GYOSAKU: She's the Songstress!

BAROKU: Songstress?

GYOSAKU: Songstress!

BAROKU: Oh, is that all!

BAROKU: Hey, cut your hair already.

BUJIN: I'm sure that this song will resound for the Ipadada, as well. Please keep singing with me.

KANON: Yes! I'll do my best!

[Prayer Song]
The song that I sing for you
Overflows with my feelings
"May you find peace in your life"
That is the message I send

Sometimes a cold wind may blow on your back
And the petals of spring scatter on the wind
But trust that someone will come along
To put a warm arm around you

Let your words ring out
Into tomorrow's sky...

0:15:42
[Prayer Song]
But trust that someone will come along
To put a warm arm around you

Let your words ring out
Into tomorrow's sky
Let's all join voices
And sing as one

0:16:32
KANON: Sing with me!

IKECHIYO: Everyone. We have to sing and help Bujin.

[Prayer Song]
The song that I sing for you
Overflows with my feelings
"May you find peace in your life"
That is the message I send

Sometimes a cold wind may blow on your back
And the petals of spring scatter on the wind
But trust that someone will come along

Let your words ring out
Into tomorrow's sky
Let's all join voices
And sing as one

0:17:23
BUJIN: Don't run. Listen to our song!

0:17:49
BUJIN: Worry not. Trust in me!

IPADADA: No! I don't trust anyone!!

KANON: Taihei... Bujin is turning to stone again...

HAKKOKU: He has no choice.

KANON: But...

BUJIN: Worry not. I am merely going to sleep, while I have a talk with the Ipadada...

KANON: I can't believe it ends like this...

TAIHEI: Bujin!

KANON: I'm so sorry!

0:18:42
BUJIN: Kanon. You have nothing to apologize for. I'm so happy that you sang with me.

KANON: Will we sing together again?

BUJIN: For now, I must use all my power to deal with the Ipadada.

BUJIN: But... I will still be here. I hope you will sing for me, from time to time.

KANON: Bujin!

TAIHEI: Bujin!

KANON: Bujin...

0:19:55
BUJIN: My name is Omahito. What is your name?

BUJIN: As you wish. I have all the time in the world. Let's have a nice, long talk.

0:20:30
KANON: It's so peaceful, it's hard to believe it happened just yesterday.

KANON: I wonder if I'll meet Bujin again, when I'm an old lady myself.

KANON: Hey... Taihei?

KANON: I'll be going back to Tokyo soon...

TAIHEI: Oh.

KANON: If I go to Dai-chan, will I see you there?

TAIHEI: Kanon... I'm an Onbake. Onbake exist to help humans. If there are people out there who are sad and suffering the way that you were, I've gotta go help them.

KANON: Then... if I'm ever sad and suffering again...

TAIHEI: Then maybe I'll be there.

KANON: And can I see you if I come here again?

TAIHEI: Of course! And Bujin too... I think he wants to hear you sing.

[Prayer Song]
When the sound of the bell
Rings through the village
All the birds, together,
Fly back to the mountain

No one wants to be all alone
But each has only one voice
So let's join all our voices together
And bring a smile to everyone

If we all join hands together,
How much warmer will we feel?

0:23:31
IKECHIYO: I hope all the humans out there will hear this song. Maybe we won't get any more Ipadada.

TAIHEI: I hope so. And maybe we'll see more of our comrades getting born.

KANON: Can you hear our song, Bujin?

BUJIN: Yes. Thank you, Kanon!

Translation: Daimajin Kanon Episode 25

Second-to-last episode!

No major notes here, but check out the new (2nd verse) ending theme. I guess they wanted to get them both in there before the finale, but I think the new lyrics are very suitable.

Stay tuned for the final episode of Daimajin Kanon!

[Opening song]
Someone tells you
Lies like they're true
Someone betrays you

A reason for living will show itself

You will find the prize
Just sing your heart out

NARRATOR: On the way to Yamagata, Kanon learned of the reason why Bujin turned to stone, and that he is necessary to defeating the Ipadada. She agreed to help the others as the Songstress.

NARRATOR: Meanwhile, the Ipadada continued to send out humanoid soul drones, and became a massive Hecatosoul Ipadada, forcing the Onbakes' hand.

0:02:19
KANON: Bujin! It's nice to meet you! I'm Misaki Kanon!

0:02:29
TITLE: His Distance

KANON: Bujin!

TAIHEI: He's been silent for a long time, I guess.

KANON: Taihei's told me a lot about you, Bujin. He told me you love people, and you've worked hard to help them. And that humans repaid you with cruelty... as a representative of humanity, I want to apologize. I'm so, so sorry!

TAIHEI: You ain't said a thing the whole time we've been here! This girl came a long way to see you! At least have the decency to say hello!

KANON: Um... the song I'm about to sing is the Prayer Song. I rewrote so it doesn't feel like a lie to me anymore.

KANON: I was thinking, I'd like you to be able to hear how I feel. So, I'm going to sing. Please listen. This is my Prayer Song.

[Kanon's Prayer Song]
The sound of your voice
Is different from mine
But they har--

BUJIN: Little girl.

TAIHEI: Bujin!

KANON: Yes?

BUJIN: Why do you sing?

BUJIN: Is it because you are the Songstress?

KANON: No... I just... wanted to show you how I feel.

BUJIN: And what do you mean to accomplish by doing this?

KANON: Well... maybe I'm just being selfish, but I think that the real Bujin is more than some rock on a mountain!

BUJIN: What do you mean?

KANON: You're the very first Onbake, so I think you'd be happier helping people. So... I thought maybe it would be more true to yourself if you'd stand, and start helping people again.

BUJIN: It's not possible.

TAIHEI: What do you mean?

BUJIN: I don't need you people to tell me who I am. I've known these things for a long time.

TAIHEI: Then why are you still sittin' there as a rock!?

BUJIN: I don't need to explain myself to you!

0:05:41
IKECHIYO: Gombei must be fighting hard right about now.

OTAKI: Yes. All we can do is pray for his success.

IKECHIYO: And Kanon's and Taihei's, too.

TAMEKICHI: Yeah. But once this is all over, we'll have a big feast to celebrate!

SHOUTA: And we can have lots of songs, too!

0:06:22
KANON: Bujin! Please, don't suffer in silence! Tell us what's bothering you!

BUJIN: It's none of your business.

KANON: No, I think it is!

BUJIN: What's that, now?

KANON: It seems to me that the Onbake and humans have an unbreakable connection, a bond that makes us need to support one another. So... I think your problems are my problems, too.

BUJIN: Don't spew your platitudes at me.

TAIHEI: That's no way to talk to a lady! Don't make me tell you again!

0:07:10
BUJIN: Songstress. Your name was Kanon, yes?

KANON: Yes, sir!

BUJIN: What does singing mean to you?

KANON: When my gramma would sing the Prayer Song to me, it made me feel at peace. Like all my troubles were gone. So it makes me happy to use songs to express my feelings to others.

BUJIN: Is that so?

KANON: Yes. A song is like a beautiful letter that sends your feelings to the people around you.

BUJIN: Yes... a song is a beautiful thing. I also sang the Prayer Song to express my feelings to the people.

BUJIN: Trusting one another... loving one another... I sang with heart full of respect and gratitude towards the people who gave me life.

TAIHEI: I knew you really loved people! Love for humans is part of an Onbake's nature!

TAIHEI: Bujin! Won't you let us hear your Prayer Song?

BUJIN: Have you been listening, Taihei? I can't sing that song anymore!

TAIHEI: What do you mean? You just hate singing now?

BUJIN: I don't have the heart to sing that song for humans anymore. Please respect that.

KANON: Are you saying you don't want to trust humans anymore?

KANON: When my grandmother taught me the Prayer Song, it expressed the joy that comes from people having faith in each other. That's why... it became painful for me to sing it, after I lost that faith.

SHOUTA: Jan-ken-po! Jan-ken-po!

0:09:43
TAIHEI: I think maybe we upset him...

KANON: Taihei... maybe we should...

TAIHEI: ... Yeah.

KANON: It feels wrong to leave him alone like this, but...

TAIHEI: Let's go home.

TAIHEI: She's saying not to go.

0:10:20
BUJIN: Stop that, Tamakko!

TAIHEI: What's goin' on?

TAIHEI: You're saying he sometimes feels like singing even now, but...

TAIHEI: Sometimes he even asks you to sing for him?

TAIHEI: And how does he react when you do that?

TAIHEI: She says that when she sings for him, it makes him sad...

KANON: Bujin... can we really be of no use to you?

BUJIN: You're wasting your time. I do not trust humans. Because of that... there is no use in trying to take back my song.

0:11:29
GOMBEI: There it is! Let's go!

YUMONJI: The Ipadada doesn't seem to like fighting Gombei...

KAENJI: He must have learned from our memories when he was inside us.

SAWAMORI: Yes.

YUMONJI: Then he knows about the method by which Ipadada are sealed...

SAWAMORI: We have to support Gombei somehow...

SAWAMORI: Hashitaka!

HASHITAKA: Yes, sir!

SAWAMORI: Go to Hakkoku. He should have a spell for slowing a giant Ipadada's movements.

HASHITAKA: Yes, sir!

TOMOSUKE: I'll go, too!

TAIHEI: Bujin! Why won't you even try to trust Kanon? If you trusted her, you might be able to sing again!

BUJIN: Kanon.

KANON: Yes?

BUJIN: I can tell that you love people. But you are human, and humans are traitors.

KANON: It's true that there are times when the people you trust will betray you. But I refuse to give up my faith in them. But if you trust them, you can sing with them, and that's important to me.

BUJIN: I understand how you feel, but I have lost my song. Because of that... I can be of no use against the Ipadada.

TAIHEI: Huh?

BUJIN: In the past, I subdued the Ipadada by communicating the beauty of life through song. Without my song, I cannot fulfill my duty.

BUJIN: Now I want to be alone. Leave this place.

KANON: I will not leave.

KANON: I believe in you, Bujin! Let me stay here with you!

0:14:10
GYOSAKU: Kanon's become a fine young lady.

BAROKU: Sometimes it seems like she's growin' up too fast.

GYOSAKU: My sister did a good job raisin' you, and you carried that on to Kanon.

BAROKU: I don't know about that.

GYOSAKU: Kanon works hard to help people, just like you.

BAROKU: You mean a busybody like you, right?

GYOSAKU: And where would we be without busybodies, huh!?

BAROKU: Can't argue with that.

0:14:47
BUJIN: Kanon. You truly are a busybody.

KANON: I just want to sing with you, Bujin! Taihei and the Onbake believe in you, too! You have comrades waiting for you! There are people who trust you! Why do you insist on remaining alone!?

KANON: Remember, please! Remember that Onbake like you could only be born into the world because there are people out there who know how to love. You helped people as a way to return that love.

KANON: Plenty of people will hurt and betray one another, but there are also plenty who trust... who love... who work to help one another! Don't give up on them... won't you take your place among humans again?

KANON: I don't think you're being true to yourself if you don't!

TAIHEI: Did you hear what Kanon said to you? Won't you listen to her song? I know you don't want to sing! I know that it's painful for you! But... you can't possibly think it's going to change if you just sit there! Everyone's counting on you! You can't just ignore that! You're an Onbake, Bujin!

TAIHEI: I've been working to help people because I admired you! I want you to show me what saving people is all about! Please, Bujin!!

KANON: Bujin!

0:16:55
HASHITAKA: Hakkoku!

OTAKI: Hashi, what's wrong?

HASHITAKA: The Ipadada is putting up a fight. We thought maybe one of Hakkoku's spell scrolls could help support Gombei.

HAKKOKU: I understand. The scroll of binding, is it?

HASHITAKA: Thank you so much!

IKECHIYO: What are you doing here, Tomosuke?

TOMOSUKE: Hashi's too fast for me!

HASHITAKA: Don't call me Hashi.

TAMEKICHI: Get out of here already!

TOMOSUKE: I'm doing the best I can! Wait up!

IKECHIYO: That fool.

0:17:40
TAIHEI: You IDIOT!

BUJIN: What was that?

KANON: Bujin!

TAIHEI: Kanon!

JYUZO: It's Bujin!

TAIHEI: Are you alright, Kanon?

KANON: Taihei... Bujin...

TAIHEI: Who needs that stubborn ass!

TAIHEI: I was wrong to believe in him!

IKECHIYO: Jyuzo, I'm going to check it out.

SHOUTA: I'm going, too.

JYUZO: Oh, take care!

IKE&SHOUTA: Roger that!

IKECHIYO: Let's go!

0:18:49
SAWAMORI: Did you get it?

HASHITAKA: Yes.

GOMBEI: Gotcha! Grr... how dare you!

0:19:25
GOMBEI: Gotcha now! Take this!

GOMBEI: That's the end of you!

GOMBEI: I'll show you my strength...

GOMBEI: Now let's go! Let's go...

GOMBEI: I am the greatest!

0:20:16
YUMONJI: It's all over.

TOMOSUKE: Ah... then...

SAWAMORI: Gombei sealed the Ipadada.

TOMOSUKE: Oh, good...

HASHITAKA: We should let Jyuzo know.

TOMOSUKE: Oh! Oh! I'll do it!

GOMBEI: The greatest of my generation! That was good!

0:21:06
IKECHIYO: Oh, my.

TAIHEI: Oh, you guys!

IKECHIYO: Kanon! What happened here?

TAIHEI: We went mountain climbing after riding all night, she thought she could handle it.

IKECHIYO: I see. That's terrible.

SHOUTA: You couldn't convince Bujin at all?

TAIHEI: No...

0:21:39
BAROKU: Even young people can't handle mountain climbing after an all-night ride.

TAIHEI: I was with her. I'm sorry.

BAROKU: It's not like you twisted her arm.

TAIHEI: Except I did. I asked her for a favor I shouldn't have.

BAROKU: I see.

0:22:01
JYUZO: I see.

IKECHIYO: I'm more worried about Gombei, but it looks like Bujin's being stubborn, too.

JYUZO: I see...

TOMOSUKE: We did it! It's done!

JYUZO: Huh?

IKECHIYO: It's done?

TOMOSUKE: Yes! Gombei pulled a total upset in the clutch!

JYUZO: I see! Then you're saying Gombei sealed the Ipadada?

IKECHIYO: Hooray!

SHOUTA: Hooray!

TOMOSUKE: Hooray! Hooray!

JYUZO: Banzai!

TOMOSUKE: Banzai!

TOMOSUKE: We did it!

TAMEKICHI: Thank goodness!

JYUZO: Yes!

OTAKI: You all did a fine job.

[Ending Theme]
Who is right and who is wrong?
No one can ever know the answer for sure
Even though I try my best
I'm sure I've hurt people without realizing it
The scratches on my body are the proof that I've tried
And my scars are the sign of what I've overcome
I'm taking the long way home today
Because I've found the thing that I'm searching for
I'm walking home with that song on my lips
For someone out there who's lost and afraid
Tomorrow, I'm sure they'll hear me.

Translation: Daimajin Kanon Episode 24

kekeke Daimajin Rush, Part 2!

In ep 24 we get our first glimpse of the much-rumored Gombei. He's based on a bonshou bell, which is a different sort of bell than the dotaku from which Bujin derives.

Bonshou are large, cylindrical bells, struck externally (usually with a suspended log) rather than rung with a clapper. They're used in Buddhist temples, and accordingly, Japanese usage of them dates back to the 6th century or so AD, and continues into modern times.

Dotaku, by contrast, are much older, dating back as early as the 2nd century BC, and used through about the 3rd century AD. Made from bronze, the bells were believed to be used in rituals praying for the rice harvest.

Concerning more mundane matters, as far as I can tell, the Bridge of Bonds (Kizuna-bashi) that Taihei and Kanon use as their entrance to Yamagata is not the actual name of the bridge. At least, it's one of those cases where the only references I can find to it online are related to this episode. Perhaps the more Yamagata knowledgeable out there can help me out with this one?

Anyway, on to the episode!

NARRATOR: Kanon was about to return home to Yamagata for her father's remarriage. But stumbling upon both the secret of Bujin from Taihei, and the truth about Taihei's feelings from Bujin, she began to realize her destiny.

NARRATOR: Meanwhile the Ipadada, raging in its hatred, dominated the battling Onbake.

KANON: One way or another, I'm heading for Yamagata with Taihei.

KANON: Wow! It's so pretty!

TAIHEI: Look at that!

KANON: It's amazing!

0:02:55
IKECHIYO: Hakkoku! Are you awake, sir?

HAKKOKU: Is the Ipadada...?

IKECHIYO: Sawamori and the others are fighting him, driving him deep into the mountains.

TOMOSUKE: Wait!

KAENJI: Hey!

SAWAMORI: Here we go!

HASHITAKA: Just do your best.

KIRINOHA: Okay!

WAITRESS: Please, take your time.

KANON: Ta-da! It's my version of the Prayer Song!

TAIHEI: Wow! You finally finished?

KANON: I think it captures my real feelings.

TAIHEI: You think?

KANON: I don't think I could have done it without you.

KANON: Thank you so much.

TAIHEI: Oh, I didn't do so much...

KANON: But you did!

TAIHEI: That's the highest praise an Onbake can receive.

0:04:41
TAIHEI: It does feel... like a reflection of your life.

TAIHEI: Well done.

KANON: Thank you!

TAIHEI: No, thank you. Thank you for letting me read it.

KANON: So if I sing this for Bujin when we get there...

KANON: I wonder what he'll think...

TAIHEI: I don't know... he called the lyrics of the other Prayer Song a lie...

BUJIN: Enough!

BUJIN: The words of that song are a pack of lies!

KANON: I've spent a lot of time worrying about the Prayer Song, myself.

KANON: You said something happened to make Bujin close off his heart, didn't you?

KANON: Would you mind telling me a little bit more about that?

TAIHEI: Sure.

0:05:58
KANON: Bujin's most important duty was exorcising evil spirits called Ipadada.

TOBE: There, that's enough!

KANON: Oh, Jyuzo mentioned them before...

TAIHEI: When they perform enough terrible deeds, they can grow to over a hundred feet tall. Once that happened, the only Onbake who could truly face them was Bujin.

TAIHEI: Exterminating the giant Ipadada was a duty Bujin took on himself, and it was very hard on him.

TAIHEI: It took its toll on his body and mind, but Bujin still did his best. Until one day, a group of unfeeling humans rebuked him for what he had done.

TAIHEI: Bujin was very large, and very strong, but his heart was the same as a man's... at last his spirit gave out, and his body turned to stone.

0:07:13
JYUZO: Go to it!

SHOUTA: Roger that!

TAIHEI: The Prayer Song seems to take in all the prayers of the people of its generation, but... ever since Ipadada started appearing, people started using it more as a signal flare to make Bujin appear.

KANON: That's how the song was used?

TAIHEI: The last time Bujin fought an Ipadada was such a bad memory... maybe he's forgotten the good associations he had with the song.

KANON: Even though he loved it for so long... it must be hard on him.

[To The Top]
The sound of the rain
Makes the town cry...

TAIHEI: I sing it all the time.

TAIHEI: It's a great song, anyone can sing it.

KANON: You're wrong!

KANON: Bujin and I... are a lot alike.

0:08:21
YUMONJI: We're not far from where Gombei's waiting for us...

TAMEKICHI: Yumonji!

TAMEKICHI: Take a minute to refuel...

YUMONJI: Thank you!

KAENJI: Pass it here...

TAMEKICHI: Good luck, you guys!

0:08:43
OTAKI: Kazahana says the Ipadada is moving according to plan. They've all done well. It's up to Gombei, now.

OTAKI: So... how is Taihei doing? Did you call him at the shop?

JYUZO: Yeah. But Taihei wasn't there.

OTAKI: Wasn't there?

JYUZO: I got Fukumatsu instead. Said Taihei an' the Songstress are comin' down here.

OTAKI: Kanon's coming to Yamagata!? Why didn't you tell me that earlier!?

JYUZO: Hmph! Maybe I got my own plans!

IKECHIYO: Taihei... take care of our Kanon.

0:10:11
KANON: Taihei... I've been thinking, but... that Songstress stuff you mentioned?

TAIHEI: Yeah.

KANON: You came looking for me... to wake up Bujin, but... it's because you need him to stop one of those Ipadada, don't you?

TAIHEI: W-Well... it's hard to explain, but... that's... about...

KANON: I knew it.

TAIHEI: I'm sorry! I wasn't trying to trick you or anything like that!

KANON: I know. But were you intentionally avoiding telling me?

KANON: I really am sorry.

TAIHEI: Wait! Why are you apologizing?

KANON: Well... Taihei, I think...

KANON: I think it's my turn to repay a favor to you and the other Onbake.

TAIHEI: Huh?

KANON: I want to help you out, this time. So... I'll sing.

TAIHEI: Kanon!

0:12:12
IKECHIYO: Thank you for this, Gombei!

OTAKI: We're counting on you!

GOMBEI: Bring it on!

IKECHIYO: Take care, Gombei!

GOMBEI: Thank you!

JYUZO: Now, off with you!

GOMBEI: Understood!

0:12:55
SIGN: Bridge of Bonds

0:13:16
TAIHEI: We're finally in Yamagata!

KANON: It really does feel like coming home!

KANON: Well, I guess you'll need directions to my house, now.

TAIHEI: Oh, I think I know my way.

KANON: Huh?

TAIHEI: You were just a little thing...

0:13:45
TAIHEI: You remember when a landslide took out the road, and your family's car got stranded?

KANON: Huh? I do, but... how did you know about that?

KANON: Wait... the super-strong guy who saved me and ate all our food...

TAIHEI: Yep! That was me, Taihei!

KANON: Why didn't you tell me that earlier?!

TAIHEI: Huh? Well... it's funnier this way.

KANON: Hey!

SIGN: Misaki

0:14:28
TAIHEI: Hello!

KANON: I'm home!

0:14:55
TAIHEI: What is it?

KANON: Th-This thing started... moving by itself...

TAIHEI: Hey, cut it out, you prankster!

0:15:23
SHOUTA: Hey, Songstress lady.

KANON: Shouta!

0:15:45
KANON: I've come home, gramma.

TAIHEI: A message from Jyuzo, you say?

SHOUTA: He says Sawamori and the others are working hard.

TAIHEI: And what about Gombei?

SHOUTA: He's working hard.

KANON: Excuse me. You mentioned Sawamori... does that mean they're all here?

TAIHEI: Yeah. They're trying to fight off the Ipadada before it grows to giant size.

SHOUTA: They're all working hard!

KANON: But if it grows to giant size, they'll need Bujin's power, right?

TAIHEI: Yeah.

SHOUTA: So you gotta work hard too, Songstress.

SHOUTA: Anyway, I'm going back.

TAIHEI: Huh? Was that all you came to say?

SHOUTA: That's all.

[Prayer Song]
When the sound of the bell
Rings through the village...

TAIHEI: Ow, ow...

KANON: Be careful!

0:17:08
GYOSAKU: Hello!

KANON: Uncle Gyosaku!

GYOSAKU: It's been so long, eh, Kanon!

KANON: I'm real sorry I didn't look in on ya when you were laid up.

GYOSAKU: Nah, look at that, strong as a horse!

GYOSAKU: Had a little dear about your age helping me thorugh my recovery. Kinda wish I coulda stayed longer.

KANON: Of course!

GYOSAKU: She used to tell me-- hey, y'know I used to do kendo?

KANON: Oh, yeah!

GYOSAKU: She musta heard that somewhere, too. Said 'I wanna make you do kendo again, because that's the kinda person you are!'

KANON: I see! And that gave you the power to press on, huh?

GYOSAKU: Yep! Even though the therapy was real strict...

KANON: It wasn't hard on you?

GYOSAKU: Well, I didn't say that now!

KANON: ... that's it!

GYOSAKU: That's what?

KANON: Nothing, just...

KANON: No matter how hard it is, you should be who you are... I think that's it!

0:18:50
TOMOSUKE: I'm exhausted!

SAWAMORI: Keep going!

YUMONJI: Hey!

KAENJI: Wait!

0:19:16
SAWAMORI: This is...

0:19:36
TAIHEI: Here we are... now we climb!

KANON: Huh? We have to climb this?

TAIHEI: Yeah, no sweat!

KANON: Taihei?

TAIHEI: Yeah?

KANON: I was just thinking about what Uncle Gyosaku said...

TAIHEI: Yeah?

KANON: I was thinking Bujin would be a lot happier being true to himself than staying frozen like that...

TAIHEI: Yeah.

KANON: But I wonder what it means for Bujin to be true to himself?

TAIHEI: Helping people, I bet.

TAIHEI: Because he's an Onbake.

KANON: Even if he's been hurt by people?

TAIHEI: I think so. That's what I believe.

0:20:36
TAIHEI: You okay?

KANON: Yeah...

TAIHEI: One last push. Here we go!

KANON: Okay...

0:20:48
SAWAMORI: Ipadada!

GOMBEI: There you are!

GOMBEI: Bring it on!

SAWAMORI: Gombei!

GOMBEI: Why you... take this!

0:21:28
TAIHEI: We're here!

TAIHEI: That's Bujin!

KANON: Wow... he's so big! When you see him in person...

BUCHINKO: Tamakko!

TAMAKKO: Buchinko!

TAIHEI: Bujin! It's Taihei! As in 'all is peace and quiet'! I've come to see you!

TAIHEI: Kanon!

KANON: Ah, right...

KANON: Bujin... it's very nice to meet you...

TAIHEI: Louder.

KANON: Right.

KANON: Bujin! It's very nice to meet you! I'm Misaki Kanon! Bujin!

[Ending Song]
When I look up, I can still see stars
In the strip of sky between the buildings
Faintly, but I love them
Those little interwoven points of light
I'll send positive words for kindness in the future
And leave my sadness to the wind!
I'm walking home again today
'til I can walk to the place where he waits for me
I'm walking home with that song on my lips
Because I want to smile up at the blue skies
And so, I'm taking my time with my dreams

Translation: Daimajin Kanon Episode 23

Why haven't I been posting all month? Well, two reasons. First, because I've been a little busy with work. Second, because we're in the final stretch of the show. The last four episodes come together so nicely, it just seems cruel to force people to sit through the cliffhangers.

In other words, I've got the last four scripts translated, and I'll be posting them here in one great mad rush over the course of the day. Look forward to it!

Script below the cut!

NARRATOR: Misaki Kanon came to Tokyo from Yamagata, and for a time, lost her Prayer Song. Through the various people she met in Tokyo, she began to let go of the person she once was, and find her new self. And so, she gradually began to acquire a new Prayer Song.

LYRICS: We'll see the bonds that we share...

0:02:29
TITLE: Circular Origin

BAROKU: I don't know, maybe. Yeah... I'll see you tomorrow night.

KANON: YES! It's done!!

BAROKU: ... that was a shock.

BAROKU: What's done, now?

KANON: My Prayer Song!

BAROKU: YOUR Prayer Song?

KANON: I rewrote the lyrics to the Prayer Song so it reflects my feelings!

BAROKU: Oh? But your gramma taught you that song. I thought you liked it the way it was.

KANON: Well, that's true, but for the person I am now, it feels... how do I say...

BAROKU: A little simplistic?

BAROKU: Like it glosses over the bad parts of life?

KANON: How'd you know that!?

BAROKU: Well, I am your father, after all.

PROVERB: A lotus flower will bloom in the middle of the swamp

BAROKU: I think your gramma didn't believe children could bloom in the mud of the real world...

KANON: I see.

BAROKU: Hey, lemme hear that song.

KANON: What, now!?

BAROKU: Maybe you could sing it at me an' Akari's announcement ceremony on Sunday?

KANON: Ah... I'll think about it.

BAROKU: Please do.

0:04:10
JYUZO: The Songstress asked for it herself?

TAIHEI: Yeah. That's why it was such a shock!

JYUZO: I see. So the Songstress wants to hear about her connection to Bujin?

TAIHEI: I wasn't sure how to explain it to her at the time, so I asked her to give me some time.

JYUZO: And just maybe you could use this to explain to her about the Ipadada!

OTAKI: Wait a minute, there.

JYUZO: Huh? What're you fixin' to do?

TAIHEI: What's wrong, Jyuzo? Hey!

OTAKI: Taihei.

TAIHEI: Otaki!

OTAKI: Tell me how you've felt about Kanon since you started spending time with her.

TAIHEI: What's this all about?

OTAKI: Just do it!

TAIHEI: I think I've been tryin' to make it so that Kanon could sing her song from the bottom of her heart again...

OTAKI: Because that's what would make Bujin wake up too, right?

TAIHEI: Well, that would be nice an' all, but...

OTAKI: But what?

TAIHEI: I don't think it would be right to force her to sing... but I believe she'll be able to sing it again. And I think that if I tell her what happened, she'll want to help Bujin, too.

OTAKI: I see. Then I'll leave Kanon in your hands.

TAIHEI: Roger that.

0:06:32
TOMOSUKE: He doesn't seem to like Hakkoku's chant.

SAWAMORI: The chant should lead him right to the rendezvous point with Gombei.

0:06:51
KANON: I'm sorry it's so sudden.

MARUYAMA: Not at all! It's wonderful that it's happening. So you'll be needing today and tomorrow off?

KANON: Yes.

AME: Ah, going home?

KANON: Yes, thank you.

MARUYAMA: What's going on?

AME: Right now, some of the former members of 0°C are here in the restaurant! They're acting like they're big shots or something! It's a laugh riot!

KANON: Long time, no see. Have you heard from Saki lately?

IKKI: Not really.

KANON: I hear she's working hard in New York!

SHINYA: Yeah, maybe.

KANON: How about you guys? Going to start up a new band?

IKKI: Yeah, we're looking for new members now so we can do the pro thing again.

SHINYA: We've got a lot of good hopefuls right now.

KANON: That's nice!

KANON: But please, don't sing that song again. I don't want you singing To The Top anymore.

KANON: That song used to be very important to me.

KANON: I've been through some hard times lately, and I think it's wrong to step on others to get ahead. I don't think it's right to look the other way when you see it happening, either.

KANON: So it's a promise, right? Bye!

0:09:08
TOMOSUKE: Hakkoku!

SAWAMORI: Stay with him!

TOMOSUKE: Sawamori!

0:09:14
KANON: Taihei will sure be surprised when I tell him I'm heading for Yamagata today!

BAROKU: Yeah, it's me. I'm heading out right now. What about you?

KANON: I'll be right along. Just going to say hi to Taihei.

BAROKU: Gotcha. But if you don't make it, you sure it's okay for me to go without you?

KANON: Yeah. Sorry about that...

BAROKU: Okay, but just make sure you're there by noon on Sunday, okay?

KANON: Roger that!

0:10:00
[Prayer Song]
If we all join hands together
How much warmer will we feel?

KANON: Hello!

TAIHEI: Oh, hey.

FUKUMATSU: 'sup.

KANON: Oh! Fukumatsu!

FUKUMATSU: You want your sausages?

KANON: Are the others out somewhere?

TAIHEI: Yeah... they had some pressing business.

KANON: To tell the truth, I have some business, too. I'm going off to Yamagata!

TAIHEI: W-What!? Before I even told you a thing about Bujin?

KANON: Huh? No... my father's about to get re-married. When he told his family, they all asked him to bring his new bride home as soon as possible.

TAIHEI: Oh... oh! So you're going with him.

KANON: Yeah. It's just for introductions. But I can't believe I'm about to head to Yamagata around the time you were about to tell me about Bujin...

KANON: It's a real coincidence, isn't it!

TAIHEI: No kidding.

KANON: But maybe I'll stop in on Bujin while I'm there.

TAIHEI: I could take you on my bike.

KANON: Really, Taihei?

TAIHEI: Sure.

FUKUMATSU: 'twould be faster to take the train.

TAIHEI: Well, I guess that's true.

FUKUMATSU: But perhaps the girl would like to hear the rest of the story, first?

TAIHEI: Yeah, how about it?

KANON: Ah... well...

0:12:14
KANON: If you would.

TAIHEI: First, some background on Bujin...

KANON: Okay.

TAIHEI: Bujin is an Onbake incarnated from this huge, ancient dotaku bell. He started helping out humans as a way to repay them for his incarnation. I think that's why we Onbake born since are so naturally inclined to help humans.

KANON: Oh... so Bujin is a bit like your ancestor?

TAIHEI: Bujin got along so well with the ancient humans, he would sing and dance with them...

KANON: You did tell me he loved singing.

TAIHEI: Yeah. I loved that about Bujin too, but... listen. There was one particular song he would always sing...

0:14:02
TAIHEI: That. The Prayer Song.

KANON: Well... then... the reason my song woke him up...

TAIHEI: ... is because he has a connection to that song.

KANON: But he also got angry and called my song a lie.

TAIHEI: Yeah... he spends his days in silence, now. But I think if he can hear the new Prayer Song you wrote, it might call to him.

TAIHEI: When that happens, I'd like to see Bujin with my own eyes.

KANON: Does that mean you came from Yamagata looking for me... because you wanted to awaken Bujin?

TAIHEI: In terms of my duty... that was a part of it.

KANON: I'm sorry!

TAIHEI: I'll go buy more!

0:15:21
IPADADA: You again?

SAWAMORI: We will sever your bonds of hatred!

0:15:42
KANON: I can't believe he kept all that from me... did you know about this, Buchinko?

KANON: But... when Taihei said that finding the Songstress was his duty...

KANON: Does that mean... that Taihei only stayed with me because...

FUKUMATSU: My dear. It's a waste of time to consider these ridiculous things.

KANON: Ah?

FUKUMATSU: If he only thought of you as the Songstress, then everything he did would have been about getting you to sing, correct?

KANON: That's true...

FUKUMATSU: In the end, we are still Onbake. If you think back on all the things he's said to you, I think you will understand.

TAIHEI: I still sing it all the time.

TAIHEI: It's a great song, anyone can sing it.

KANON: You're wrong!

TAIHEI: No wonder you started crying...

TAIHEI: You wanna grab some ramen with me?

[Onbake Song]
Sing a song to make the goblins run!
Chase 'em all through the night!

TAIHEI: All I want is to hear you sing your very own song with confidence.

0:17:35
KANON: Taihei's just been protecting me... while I took back my song for myself.

FUKUMATSU: Yes. He always believed that you could heal the scar that Tokyo put on your soul.

KANON: Thank you... Taihei.

0:18:15
JYUZO: How's Hakkoku doin'?

IKECHIYO: I think he's recovered.

TAMEKICHI: Wonderful, wonderful!

KAZAHANA: Thank goodness!

OTAKI: Hakkoku did a wonderful job, didn't he.

JYUZO: But having to rely on Hakkoku and Gombei... it shows how poor a job Taihei did, doesn't it?

OTAKI: Not at all.

SHOUTA: Yeah, no way!

OTAKI: To the contrary, your plan to use that fool was a massive success!

JYUZO: What do you mean?

SHOUTA: What do you mean?

OTAKI: I think that fool, in his own way, will put Kanon in touch with Bujin.

JYUZO: Then quit callin' him a fool.

OTAKI: I'm talking about a fool's innocence!

JYUZO: Then why didn't you say that from the start?

OTAKI: I think a task like this could only have been performed by someone as innocent as him.

JYUZO: Really? Well... I guess that's true.

OTAKI: That's why none of us can just sit back and watch. We all have our roles to fill!

0:19:36
TAIHEI: I'm sorry I'm so late!

KANON: Welcome back!

KANON: Thank you!

0:19:45
KANON: Here you are!

TAIHEI: Thanks!

TAIHEI: Wow! This is...

KANON: My extra-special Taihei Ramen! Just kidding...

TAIHEI: This is amazing! Thank you! This is the best thing!

FUKUMATSU: It appears to be her way of saying 'thank you.'

KANON: Oh, Fukumatsu!

PHONE: Dad

KANON: I'm sorry, I'm still in Sengawa...

0:20:33
IPADADA: I will make you a part of me... and grow to touch the sky...

SAWAMORI: How do you know about that!?

IPADADA: I learned a lot when I was inside you...

SAWAMORI: Then you know what we intend to do...

IPADADA: Sorry to say, but you don't stand a chance.

HASHITAKA: You have to stop running off on your own!

SAWAMORI: I'm sorry. It looked like the guidance spell was failing...

HASHITAKA: Sawamori!

TOMOSUKE: Sawamori!

SAWAMORI: Kirinoha!

KAENJI: Kirinoha!

0:21:37
KANON: I'm sorry. There was so much more I wanted to ask...

TAIHEI: I guess we'll have to talk about it when you're back in Tokyo.

KANON: Okay, I'm going!

TAIHEI: Take care!

KANON: Okay!

KANON: Ah! Y-You have to tell me where Bujin is...

TAIHEI: Umm, well, if you're familiar with... Katsumai, umm...

KANON: Sorry. I'll just call you later!

FUKUMATSU: Why don't you just go on Taihei's bike?

KANON: Eh?

TAIHEI: You're the one just sayin' it'd be faster to take the train!

FUKUMATSU: That was then. This is now.

TAIHEI: Sheesh. Okay, Kanon. Can I take you up?

KANON: But what about the store?

TAIHEI: Kanon. I think it would be best if I drove you there.

KANON: Well... please drive me, then.

TAIHEI: Roger that!

SIGN: Taking a holiday. Re-opening date unknown. -Dai-chan

TAIHEI: Okay!

TAIHEI: Then let's set off for Yamagata!

FUKUMATSU: Take care.

Translation: Daimajin Kanon Episode 22

Episode 22 is a clip show, but it's a reasonably good one. It's the sort of clip show meant to crystallize the show's themes heading into the crazy final stretch, which is basically what the show's last four episodes are.

One fairly important note for this episode, for those unfamiliar with Japanese culture: the little bag Wakamatsu wears on his belt is an o-mamori, a type of charm. You can buy them reasonably cheaply at Japanese shrines and temples, and they're supposed to offer good luck or divine protection to the bearer. Some even offer specific protections: academic success, success in love, even safe driving.

(O-mamori usually have the name of the shrine or temple where you bought them inscribed on them. If you ever have the good fortune to travel to Japan, they make very good souvenirs for friends and family.)

I can't make out whether Wakamatsu's o-mamori is a specific type of charm, or if it's just a general charm of protection; either way, the meaning of his final gesture is fairly clear.

One final note: The flashback dialogue in this episode is mostly C&Ped from the old episode scripts, with a few alterations for context. Due to the sheer amount of flashbacks in this episode, I put all the flashback dialogue in italics. Hopefully this will help to facilitate readability.

Enjoy the ep beneath the cut!

NARRATOR: The elderly inhabitants of the rest home supported Kanon's father's attempt at remarriage. At their urging, Kanon wrote lyrics to encourage him. Her song brought him closer to Akari. This filled Kanon's heart with a gladness, that poured out of her in song.

NARRATOR: Meanwhile, the Ipadada reached its next stage of evolution, and brandished a power that the Onbake could not hope to oppose.

TITLE: Penetrating Warmth

[Prayer Song]
When the sound of the bell
Rings through the village
All the birds, together,
Fly back to the mountain

No one wants to be all alone
But each has only one voice
So let's join all our voices together
And bring a smile to everyone

If we all join hands together,
How much warmer will we feel?

IKECHIYO: Taihei... Kanon... may both of you fulfill your roles.

0:03:49
IKECHIYO: Thank you. You've been so helpful.

WAKAMATSU: Not at all. Is your healing power completely refilled?

IKECHIYO: Yes, thanks to you. There's a wonderful energy in this place.

WAKAMATSU: So that's how you gain energy from water and fish? It's not like I imagined... so serene. You were beautiful.

IKECHIYO: You must be very busy with your work here.

WAKAMATSU: More or less.

IKECHIYO: But I hope you'll check in with Fukumatsu while he's looking after the shop. Sooner or later, all of the Onbake will be going there...

WAKAMATSU: To Yamagata, you mean?

WAKAMATSU: This Ipadada must be very strong.

IKECHIYO: Yes...

NEWSCASTER: ... the prisoner's death sentence was carried out yesterday...

WAKAMATSU: I heard he was possessing Misaki's ex-boyfriend...

IKECHIYO: Yes. What a terrible person he was...

SAWAMORI: An Ipadada?!

IKECHIYO: The soul drones he summoned made sport of Sawamori and the others...

WAKAMATSU: The Ipadada itself... what kind of man was he?

WOMAN: That's not right, is it?

WOMAN: Kento! Kento! Kento!

IKECHIYO: In his past life he was Saiki Kento, a man put to death for killing his parents. According to Sawamori.

WAKAMATSU: I wonder why he reincarnated as an Ipadada?

IKECHIYO: You know how experiencing kindness makes people kinder?

KENTO: And so... before she could kill me, I had to kill her instead...

IKECHIYO: Humans who become Ipadada receive no love, and nurture hearts mistrustful of others. In the end, they are reduced to seething cauldrons of hate.

0:07:27
WAKAMATSU: When you put it like that, I feel a bit bad for them.

IKECHIYO: But once they become Ipadada, all you can do is exorcise them. But it is a cruel fate.

WAKAMATSU: Do you think... you can defeat this Ipadada?

IKECHIYO: We'll do as much as we can.

0:08:01
IKECHIYO: It appeared regardless of the time of day, and its rate of growth far surpassed anything we'd seen before.

IKECHIYO: We managed to capture it once, but it escaped before we could seal it.

TAIHEI: Ikechiyo!

IKECHIYO: I have it!

IKECHIYO: It began moving quickly from host to host, and destroyed many small villages...

KAENJI: Look out!

TAMEKICHI: Kaenji!

IKECHIYO: Now it seems it's halfway to a hecatosoul.

IKECHIYO: But we mustn't allow it to reach that level.

WAKAMATSU: Would that be the strongest Ipadada you've ever faced?

IKECHIYO: That's why Gonbei is going to face him, acting as Bujin's substitute.

WAKAMATSU: But if that doesn't work...

IKECHIYO: In that case... Bujin will be our only hope.

IKECHIYO: Even though he's deep in slumber...

0:09:55
WAKAMATSU: Fukumatsu told me that you need the Songstress's song to wake Bujin up.

IKECHIYO: Yes. But you were shocked, weren't you? That she would be the girl you met.

WAKAMATSU: I was. I can't believe Misaki turned out to be this generation's Songstress.

0:10:24
IKECHIYO: But it's not a simple matter of getting Kanon to sing her song...

IKECHIYO: Bujin turned to stone because he was betrayed by humans.

IKECHIYO: Long ago, he worked hard to make people happy. But a group of humans, thinking only of themselves... rebuked him, and hurt him...

IKECHIYO: And in the end, he turned to stone.

IKECHIYO: Kanon is a human, so I don't know if Bujin will respond to her song now...

WAKAMATSU: Then how can we get Bujin to listen to Misaki?

IKECHIYO: Perhaps... if he's able to believe that she's a good person.

WAKAMATSU: A good... person?

[Prayer Song]
When the sound of the bell
Rings through the village
All the birds, together,
Fly back to the mountain

No one wants to be all alone
But each has only one voice
So let's join all our voices together
And bring a smile to everyone

If we all join hands together,
How much warmer will we feel?

0:12:08
IKECHIYO: Her happiness comes from bringing joy to others.

IKECHIYO: Kanon grew up believing in the Prayer Song, that it was only natural for people to join hands and trust one another.

KANON: What's wrong with wantin' to go to Tokyo to sing!?

IKECHIYO: But... the world is not always so kind.

[To The Top]
The sound of the rain
Makes the town cry
But I just need an umbrella
And I can't cry anymore

Standing alone on the stage
Got this one chance before me
And I'm going straight to the top
Leave all my worries behind!

0:12:51
IKECHIYO: Kanon's innocence made her more vulnerable to heartbreak, and she entered a deep depression...

KANAME: My grandmother's really sick...

GIRL: It's a big fat lie.

CYCLIST: Watch where you're going!

KANON: I'm going to stop getting involved with other people.

0:13:25
IKECHIYO: For a time, she tried to abandon the Prayer Song's principles, and give up her faith in people...

WAKAMATSU: I see...

TAIHEI: What the heck is wrong with you!?

0:13:40
IKECHIYO: But that's when Taihei appeared in her life.

TAIHEI: That pregnant woman needed your help... you just ignored her.

TAIHEI: Are you proud of that? Can you live with that!?

TAIHEI: If you want to take it out on someone, you can hit me.

BOY: Don't act like you're better than me!

TAIHEI: Ow! Oww!

KANON: Are you... alright?

0:14:15
WAKAMATSU: Having a sincerely trusting person like Taihei there must have really helped her a lot.

IKECHIYO: Maybe so. And in that way, Kanon's smile slowly returned to her...

[Layoffs Song]
Just roll with the punches
And you'll find a way through!
One way or another!
One way or another!

ALL: Cheers!

0:14:44
IKECHIYO: But when Taihei was betrayed by someone, Kanon began to question her faith in people once again...

TAIHEI: You said that song was like your soul!

MORIYA: I'm not so naive to think something will come along if I just keep singing that song. I've had my fill of dreams! Thank you. But it's time to wake up and face reality.

TAIHEI: Mori!

MORIYA: That song won't feed my wife and children.

KANON: Taihei...

0:15:27
IKECHIYO: Anyway, it's around that time that Taihei's true form came out, as well...

KANON: Taihei?

IKECHIYO: But somehow, that experience just made Kanon even stronger...

KANON: He's so cute!

IKECHIYO: Oh. That's around the time you met her too, isn't it?

WAKAMATSU: That's right, we talked about how a world that could have Onbake in it couldn't be entirely bad.

IKECHIYO: As time went on, many more things happened to Kanon...

[Prayer Song]
When the sound of the bell
Rings through the village
All the birds...

[To The Top]
The sound of the rain
Makes the town cry

IKECHIYO: Kanon had modeled her life after the Prayer Song, but someone stole it and made it his own...

KOTARO: What are you up to, lately? Got a boyfriend?

WAKAMATSU: I see...

SAKI: I heard that 0°C stole your song and rewrote it.

SAKI: Is it true?

KANON: That song was originally... my family's song.

KOTARO: Now here's what you've been waiting for, the voice of the angel! Let's get started!

IKECHIYO: That's what caused Kanon to lose her confidence in herself. But the song's singer, Saki, was completely unaware of the circumstances.

SAKI: I'm sorry!

KANON: It's not like I wrote that song myself...

SAKI: You forgive me?

KANON: Yes.

SAKI: Misaki, will you work with me?

KANON: I just can't.

SAKI: Are you just going to run away!?

SAKI: You came to Tokyo because you love music, right?

IKECHIYO: Just like Kanon, Saki dreamed of bringing joy to people with her music. She had learned to deal with the cruelty of the world a little bit earlier than Kanon. Her advice gave Kanon the push she needed.

KANON: Until I can be the person I used to be...

SAKI: You shouldn't try to be someone you're not.

SAKI: Look, people change.

SAKI: Have you thought about writing your feelings down as new lyrics for that song?

KANON: Write... new lyrics?

SAKI: I'm sure you'll be able to sing it then.

KANON: I never thought about it that way...

SAKI: So, I'll be waiting for you.

0:18:39
IKECHIYO: And so Kanon became hopeful again, and tried to live honestly. But the violent waves of life hit her again and again. She came to a stalemate.

KANON: Wouldn't you like to show your mother how you feel?

KANON: Ma'am, please, you need to look at your daughter! Can't you see she's afraid of you?

MAMA: That's none of your business!

KANON: Yes it is!

MAMA: No it isn't!

KANON: If you really love Kurara, you should see what you're doing to her!

KANON: What should I have done?

0:19:38
WAKAMATSU: Just because you want to help doesn't mean you can.

WAKAMATSU: Kindness can help people, but there are limits to what it can do.

IKECHIYO: Yes. No matter how hard you try, there are some things you can't change.

IKECHIYO: I believe Kanon's father taught her that.

BAROKU: 'You can't move a mountain by thinking at it.'

BAROKU: Besides, everyone's self-centered.

KANON: That's not true.

BAROKU: That's just you bein' naive.

KANON: What's that s'posed to mean?

BAROKU: Kanon.

KANON: What!?

BAROKU: Just be prepared in case she doesn't go along with you.

KANON: I am!

BAROKU: The parent-child bond is a strong one.

KANON: What?

KANON: You have to stop lying to yourself.

0:20:39
IKECHIYO: By dealing with all kinds of people, Kanon learned many things.

KANON: Thank you...

KOTARO: I'd like to hear you sing it... 'To The Top.'

KANON: You ASSHOLE!

IKECHIYO: She learned you can't navigate the world through kindness alone. I think that by finding that new strength, Kanon has become a truly good person.

0:21:18
WAKAMATSU: So that's what you mean when you say 'a good person'?

IKECHIYO: I think Kanon is ready to write her own, new version of the Prayer Song that can reach Bujin's heart. I believe in her.

WAKAMATSU: Even after being betrayed, Kanon worked hard to keep her faith in people. I'm sure Bujin will open his heart to her.

IKECHIYO: Well then... I suppose I should be getting along.

WAKAMATSU: Do your best.

IKECHIYO: Thank you. I will.

WAKAMATSU: Good luck.

IKECHIYO: Thank you.

WAKAMATSU: You too, Misaki.

WAKAMATSU: The new warmth you've found in your heart will reach him. I'm sure of it.

WAKAMATSU: Good luck...

NARRATOR: Kanon is uncertain about her role as the Songstress. The Onbake struggle under the Ipadada's fearful onslaught. Just then, Buchinko's carelessness results in...!

Translation: Kaiketsu Zubatto, Episode 5

Well! After having so much trouble with episode 4, episode 5 was surprisingly easy!

One thing I like about this show is that the episodes have a clear structure, without being strictly formulaic. Hayakawa will always have a showdown with a bodyguard, Midori will always get a beating, the villain of the week will always have a chat with Boss L. And of course, Hayakawa will always get at least one snappy, word-twisting rejoinder per episode.

But within this loose structure, the actual details change in ways significant enough to keep it from really feeling formulaic. In this episode, we see Hayakawa actually interacting with Midori after he saves her, and a Boss L who is actually pleased with his subordinate's actions! It suggests that there is some real escalation going on in the conflict, which is what makes you want to keep tuning in.

Check out the ep script beneath the cut!

Zu-VATT, I'm on the scene! Zu-VATT, I solve the case!

The only wind that I feel on my face
Is a wind of revenge, a burning wind!
Hunt them down! Hunt them down, and corner them!

Zu-VATT, I'm on the scene! Zu-VATT, I solve the case!
My friend, my dear friend!
My friend, please watch my howling whip!

MICHIRU: Would you like to buy a flower? Or a box of matches?

MICHIRU: Would you like to buy a flower? Or a box of matches?

MIDORI: Look at that little girl...

OSAMU: I feel bad for her... let's buy something.

MIDORI: We'd like a flower and a box of matches.

MICHIRU: Oh no! You can't!

OSAMU: Why not? You've got plenty, right?

MICHIRU: I can't! He'll get mad at me...

OSAMU: What are you doing!?

GANG: Shut up!

GANG: Take them away!

OSAMU: Let us go!

0:02:55
TITLE: The Flower Girl and the White Powder

OSAMU: Stay back! I won't let you hurt Midori!

GANG: What was that, kid?

OSAMU: If you want to fight someone, fight me!

GANG: This kid's got spunk.

0:03:18
MAN: Michiru.

MICHIRU: Uncle!

MAN: There's nothing to be afraid of now, Michiru. I've taken care of all the bad guys.

MICHIRU: Thank you, Uncle!

MAN: Good girl. Anyone who doesn't know the password is a bad guy. Make sure you don't sell any flowers or matches to them.

MICHIRU: Of course! I'll do whatever you ask, Uncle!

MAN: That's my girl.

0:03:40
GANG: You really think you can fight the Crimson Rose Consortium?

MIDORI: Stop it!

MIDORI: Please stop!

GANG: Wait a minute!

0:04:20
GANG: Who are you!?

HAYAKAWA: The janitor from hell, here to sweep up dirt like you.

GANG: Damn... you'll pay for this!

HAYAKAWA: Bye-bye.

MIDORI: Mr. Hayakawa!

OSAMU: I knew you'd be in Tokyo.

HAYAKAWA: Midori. I need to have a word with you.

MIDORI: Anything.

HAYAKAWA: You must stop this journey of yours.

HAYAKAWA: Even without Osamu by your side, this business is too dangerous for a woman.

0:05:17
GANG: How did it go, Michiru?

GANG: Did you sell everything?

GANG: Hey! Get her some new flowers and matches.

GANG: Sure.

GANG: Good. We'll need you out there one more time. Got it?

GANG: What's wrong!?

GANG: Who did this!?

GANG: Who!?

GANG: Who are you!?

HAYAKAWA: You won't even prepare tea for a visitor who's come so far to see you?

GANG: What do you want!?

HAYAKAWA: Do you need to ask? I won't let anyone force such a little girl into flower-selling.

GANG: What was that?

HAYAKAWA: I'm taking the girl.

GANG: Just try it!!

0:06:10
GANG: Boss!!

HUSTLER: Flashy as always. You're Hayakawa, are you?

HAYAKAWA: Flamboyant as always. You're Hustler, are you?

HUSTLER: Ah. I see you've heard of me.

HAYAKAWA: You're quite famous.

HAYAKAWA: The bodyguard of the Crimson Rose Consortium's boss, Crimson Spider.

HAYAKAWA: You're well-known for your skill with a billiard cue. And yet... you're only the second-best in Japan.

HUSTLER: The second-best? And just who is a more able billiard-player than I?

HUSTLER: We'll see about that.

HUSTLER: Hayakawa... if you lose, I'm taking your arm.

HAYAKAWA: Hustler... if you lose, I'm taking that girl out of here.

HUSTLER: Watch this.

0:07:40
HUSTLER: Give it a try.

HAYAKAWA: Sorry. I guess I win.

HUSTLER: I'd like to turn Michiru over to you as promised, but I regret to inform you that she loves flower-selling. She ran out to sell more just a moment ago.

HAYAKAWA: I see.

0:08:35
MAN: Excuse me, dear. I'll take a black rose and a box of matches.

MAN: Run!

POLICE: Wait!

POLICE: Wait! You won't get away!

MICHIRU: Save me!

POLICE: Just hand that girl over to us!

HAYAKAWA: I'm afraid not, you playground bullies.

POLICE: Playground bullies?!

HAYAKAWA: Bullies who tease little girls deserve a good spanking.

POLICE: You... you'd better not try to stop us!

TOJO: Hayakawa! Are you interrupting an arrest!?

HAYAKAWA: Huh?

HAYAKAWA: Police?! Then... that girl was...

0:10:23
HAYAKAWA: It's cocaine!

TOJO: She carries red roses, but she'll only sell to people who use the pass phrase and ask for black roses.

TOJO: Hayakawa. There's something I need to show you.

TOJO: This man was a successful businessman. He had a beautiful wife and youngsons at home. That drug is what turned him into this.

TOJO: This man was a professional baseball player. He played third base, and manychildren looked up to him.

TOJO: I can give no quarter to the corruptor of these good men... Crimson Spider, the leader of the Crimson Rose Consortium.

TOJO: ... Nor to anyone who works for him. Not even that flower-selling girl, Okamura Michiru. Even if she is a child, I cannot forgive her.

HAYAKAWA: But... I'm sure she's just being used by them.

TOJO: Are you still saying that, Hayakawa!

HAYAKAWA: Tojo. No matter what you say, I have faith in children. The person I cannot forgive... is Crimson Spider, who led her astray!

0:11:43
BOSS L: Well done, Crimson Spider! You are well-suited as a member of the evil organization Dakkar!

SPIDER: Thank you, Boss L! Our drug market will grow rapidly from here out! There won't be warehouses enough to store all the bills!

BOSS L: Or the addicts, either, I assume?

SPIDER: Naturally! A Japan full of addicts to our cocaine!

0:12:17
MICHIRU: Would you like to buy a flower? Or a box of matches?

MICHIRU: Would you like to buy a flower? Or a box of matches?

HAYAKAWA: Hi, Michiru.

HAYAKAWA: You don't have to sell these anymore. You're afraid of the Crimson Rose Consortium, aren't you? Don't worry. I'll take you home. Where is your home, dear?

HAYAKAWA: Michiru!

HAYAKAWA: Michiru!

HAYAKAWA: I want to save you... from Crimson Spider's clutches. Okay?

HAYAKAWA: Michiru! Michiru!

0:13:14
EYECATCH: The Magnificent Zuvatt

SPIDER: Hayakawa.

HAYAKAWA: No need to introduce myself, I guess. Crimson Spider... where did you take Michiru!?

SPIDER: I don't know...

SPIDER: Let me go!

HAYAKAWA: How dare you... using an innocent child as your pawn!

MICHIRU: Stop it!

0:13:55
HAYAKAWA: Michiru?

MICHIRU: Please don't hit my Uncle Spider!

MICHIRU: Uncle Spider is a good man! He took me in when I was all alone, and gave me a job selling flowers and matches!

HAYAKAWA: Michiru... those flowers and matches are...

MICHIRU: Get out of here! Go away! Uncle Spider is a nice man, just like my dead father!

MICHIRU: Leave me alone!

SPIDER: Do you see now, Hayakawa? It's just as I said... Michiru is helping me with my work.

SPIDER: That's a good girl, Michiru. I'm fine now. The bad man will be gone soon.

0:15:08
GANG: He's makin' fun of us!

GANG: Take this!

0:15:24
GANG: On your feet!

0:15:41
GANG: What's wrong with you!?

MICHIRU: Stop it! Stop it, please! Just let him go home!

SPIDER: Michiru asked you nicely. Throw the troublemaker out.

0:16:08
HAYAKAWA: Michiru is convinced that Spider is a good person...

HAYAKAWA: If only she knew the kind of man he truly is...

HAYAKAWA: Asuka. What would you do in my place? Should I show her the truth?

HAYAKAWA: Asuka... tell me, please!

0:16:54
SPIDER: Michiru!

MICHIRU: Hi, Uncle Spider!

SPIDER: Would you like to take a drive with me today?

MICHIRU: Really? I'm so happy! Just you wait! I'm going to put on my prettiest dress!

SPIDER: That's my girl!

MICHIRU: Wait for me!

SPIDER: Michiru has become a liability to us. Kill her!

MICHIRU: I'm scared! Save me, Uncle Spider!

SPIDER: Just die like a good girl, Michiru!

MICHIRU: Uncle, I'm sorry for whatever I did wrong! Please forgive me! Uncle Spider!

SPIDER: Three minutes left until three o'clock. I told Hayakawa I'd be killing Michiru at three. He'll be here, I'm sure.

MICHIRU: Let me go, Uncle! I promise I'll work harder at flower-selling! Please forgive me!

SPIDER: Is that him?

0:18:12
SPIDER: Fire!

SPIDER: A trick...

SPIDER: Wait, Hayakawa! One step closer, and Michiru dies!

SPIDER: We got him! Now, to take out Michiru!

0:19:19
SPIDER: What is that thing!?

HAYAKAWA: Flight switch, on!

HAYAKAWA: Stay right there.

0:19:49
SPIDER: Who do you think you are!?

HAYAKAWA: Zu-VATT, I'm on the scene! Zu-VATT, I solve the case! They call me the wandering hero... the Magnificent Zuvatt!

SPIDER: The Magnificent Zuvatt!?

HAYAKAWA: Your cocaine turned people into invalids while you gorged yourself on the profits... and after manipulating the blameless Michiru, you tried to kill her! Crimson Spider, you will pay!

0:21:06
HUSTLER: Die!

0:21:18
HUSTLER: Your cue form... is excellent.

SPIDER: Spare me, please!

HAYAKAWA: Zuvatt Attack!

0:21:51
HAYAKAWA: Crimson Spider! You killed Asuka Goro, didn't you!?

SPIDER: I didn't... I have an alibi for that time...

HAYAKAWA: Then who did it!?

SPIDER: I... don't know...

HAYAKAWA: Asuka... I was wrong again. But I swear, I will find the man who killed you.

CARD: This man is guilty of narcotics dealing and attempted murder.

MICHIRU: Mr. Hayakawa! Please forgive me! I'm sorry!
